As the end of an unusually hot summer neared on the island of Fortüth, two young men arrived at Shīsaidobirejji (シーサイドビレッジ, literally meaning Seaside Village). They were both in foul moods after being scolded by their parents and grandfather for screwing up on their last mission off the island. They failed to escort a noble family on the continent, and barely escaped with their lives. Kenji(16) really didn't want to go to the village after that, but his older brother Fuji(18) pushed him into coming along. Walking through the village streets, they notice that most of the people who are usually there are gone.
Fuji: "Hmh, looks like everyone's left."
Kenji: "There were supposed to be some large shipments coming in from the continent today, the people here always go to the bay market to trade when they arrive."
Fuji: "Tsks, it really is only peasants that live here."
Kenji: Now even more annoyed by that statement, he just agrees "I guess, yeah."
Approaching the center of the village, they come up to the largest house there. This house belongs to Maebure Kogoshi, or Mae(Mai), their youngest cousin. She's an outcast in the family because she hasn't manifested their unique energy technique, even though she's already 11. Because of this, her and her mother are not very welcome with the rest of the family. But her father, Akio Kogoshi, is.
Rounding the corner of the house, they both see Mae sitting on a bench near the covered entryway. As they walk towards her, Kenji notices something odd about Mae. How is she not sweating in this heat, especially in those baggy clothes? He thinks this as he hangs back, while Fuji continues walking forward. Once Fuji reaches Mae, she looks up at him, staring directly into his eyes. This slightly irritates him.
Fuji: "So, looks like everyone left you here alone?"
Mae: She looks back down to the ground "Yeah."
Fuji: Good. "Even your mother?"
Mae: "Yes." She says this reluctantly.
Fuji: Even better! "Well then, looks like nobody will be here to stop me today!"
As soon as those words left his mouth, he swung his left fist straight into Mae's face. This knocks her off the bench and onto the ground. Fuji then kicks her in the stomach while she lays there, sending her into the wall of her house. Before He can kick her again, he hears something from her that he's never heard before. Crying. Is she really crying?
Mae: Trying to hold back her tears "Why do you keep doing this to me?"
Fuji: "Hehe. Seriously, why? Iv'e told you why a thousand times you little shit." He then picks her up off the ground by her shoulders. "It's because you're a weak, pathetic waste of space!" With that, he punches her right in the gut, sending her tumbling back through the dirt road.
Mae: Rising to her knees, she looks up at Fuji coming towards her. "But we're family? You don't do this to your family, even if they're weak!"
Fuji: This is the most arguing she's ever given me. It's getting kind of annoying. "You think I give a fuck that we're family?" Stepping in front of her, he punches her in the left side of her face again. "The fact that we're somehow related is what's so irritating. Inheriting no techniques in this family makes you useless!" He punches again in the same spot, knocking Mae on to her right side. He crouches down and smirks. "But let's be honest. Even if you did inherit the technique, it would've probably been your father's variation. Which is still the weakest of all the variations hahaha."
Hearing all of this, Mae broke down even further. Now unable to stop her tears from flowing. Seeing Fuji doing this to Mae really disgusted Kenji, so much so that he almost couldn't watch. He also knew that he couldn't stop watching either, just in case he had to stop Fuji.
