Drew's eyes gradually fluttered open, slowly taking in his surroundings. His heart was heavy with trepidation, even in the numbing silence. He couldn't hear the sound of breathing, nor even the high-pitched chirp of birds or the barking of neighbours dogs. Well, he appreciated the latter.
Drew fucking hated dogs.
His eyes trembled shut. Drew refused to let all the bad thoughts come. The silence was hefty, but with it came a resounding peace. If he spoiled it, then he'd have to reality once again. Spending time with Liam and Henry lifted a weight off of his shoulders. It was hardly a thing, the same as a feather, but he was so tormented by everything and anything all the damn time.
He felt substantially lighter.Even if Drew knew he wasn't.
Maybe..maybe this was the place between heaven and hell: The purgatory.
If he could postpone their judgment and stay in the calm for a while..If god could just give him that. That one thing, then Drew would go to hell without any qualms. He would go to the place he belonged, if he could bathe in the sunlight just one minute more. If—
Someone spoke, penetrating the silent cocoon of unspoken, unattainable hopes Drew had wrapped around himself.
His eyes burst open in surprise when he heard the words, and that familiar voice.
His hopeless dreaming came crashing down with their one sentence."I'm so fucking over him. I miss the old Drew, the one who wasn't such an asshole all the time and threw tantrums like a crybaby," Henry groaned.
"Ugh, I know right?" Someone else agreed.
Drew's mouth slipped open hearing their voice. His whole body tensed. The foreboding returned in full blast. He should run, cover his ears, interrupt.
But he didn't. His fists clenched but he didn't. His stomach churned but he didn't.
A knot was in his throat, blocking out the air, but he didn't.
He wanted to know what his best friends would say when they thought he was asleep and oblivious. He wanted this to be a horrible nightmare.
He wanted to scream.
The other continued, unaware of the extra pair of eyes watching him. "He's such a pain. I wanna leave him already, but he'll probably through a tantrum like with Jake. God, he's such a crybaby. He's way too attached, it's fucking annoying. I mean, it's like his boyfriend broke up with him. Disgusting. He's always getting pissy at us when things don't go his way but I bet he'd start sobbing if we did the same," Liam sneered spitefully.
The same Liam as the one who ate lunches with him every day. The same Liam he called—even if he'd never admit it—a friend.
His voice was full of hatred. This kind of tangible resentment towards someone that had simmered for years and years and years, until it reached its breaking point—ready to overflow. The kind that tore up Drew's heart.
You could feel it. That little crack, echoing through the entire room. You couldn't hear it, but you could feel it in your bones.
Drew's breathing got shorter and faster. They were shallow but he was drowning anyways, and—goddamnit—what the hell was going on? How could they.? How could they say all that shit about him when he was right there?
But no. Of course they would.
Even when he was right there.
