"So, 'the Walking Myth' finally decided to grace my office with his presence." Said the large man across the room.
I closed the polished wooden door behind me, performing a sweep of the mayor's office. Cops in bulletproof vests and signature face-shields flanked on both sides of the mahogany desk. Their gazes were trained on me.
"If I remember correctly," I took a bold step forward, and the cops slightly shuffled back. "You promised on national television to declare me the City's public enemy number one if I didn't show."
"Ah," Mayor Leron ran a hand through his grey hair. His eyes held a glint of mischief. "Why, that was just me playing around. Although, you did well to honor my invitation. "
Noticing that the cops were inching closer, I clenched the fists of my cream gold armor. "Then why do I get the feeling I just walked into a trap?"
Mayor Leron rose from his seat, eclipsing a portion of his desk from the daylight streaming in through a large window behind him. His gait was authoritative and his tone took a grave edge. "Let's cut to the chase, hm? You showed up like what? Two weeks ago? And quite frankly, you've been nothing but trouble." He shrugged. "You can't be trusted, whatever your name is. So I'm ordering your arrest."
The lead cop lowered his shield and whipped out a handcuff.
Mayor Leron tilted his head. "If you truly do respect the law, you will surrender peacefully. And you will take off that mask if you sincerely mean well."
"Blitz," I panicked internally. "What do I do now?"
"Relax," Blitz stabilized my heart rate. "Jason, there's an opportunity to prove yourself. But we have to act quickly."
"Then tell me already!" I clamored. When I saw cops flinch, it dawned on me that my final reply was said out loud instead of mentally. They gave each other wary glances, hesitation evident in their movements.
These poor dudes are torn between following orders and following their gut. Everyone in this room knew what I was capable of doing.
"I intercepted a radio transmission within the neighbourhood," Blitz said. "An assassination attempt is in motion. Protect Leron Parker."
Peering out the window behind Mayor Leron, I spied something strange on a distant rooftop. Zooming in, it turned out to be a sniper, dressed in full black. His rifle was pointed in the mayor's direction as he lay on his belly.
Mayor Leron frowned, unfortunately oblivious to the call of Grim. "Hurry up and cuff him already!" He barked.
"Blitz, there's no way I can stop a bullet." I attempted to shrug off my obligation. At this point, I was unmotivated to save anyone in this room.
"You're telling me you'd rather let the bad guy win right in front of you?" Blitz countered. "Evil prevails when good people do nothing."
Grunting, I triggered my jetpack to pop out, startling everyone in the room. Locking my gaze on the sniper, I flew past a cursing mayor, smashing through the window without losing momentum.
A few meters away from my target, something ticklish ricocheted off my armor—most likely the bullet intended for the mayor.
But all my focus was on perfecting a high-quality punch. My opponent realized my intentions a second too late.
WHAM!
***
"Well," Mayor Leron fixed his tie, relief oozing out of him as he observed the unconscious shooter in his office. I had one foot on the shooter's chest. The mayor cleared his throat. "Perhaps I misjudged you a little bit.""A little bit?" Blitz and I retorted mentally.
"I appreciate your help today." He jammed his hands together. "However, we, the people of New Chronos City, still don't trust you. There's a lot about you we don't understand."
An officer stepped forward and raised his face shield, revealing a hopeful smile. "Mr. Mayor, with all due respect, not all of us share your view on trusting Tekeon."
