Geto Suguru is one step away from achieving his goals.
There was nothing else that stood in his way. One more step and he would be able to turn this world into the paradise that he so longed for. One more step. That turned into a hop. Into a jump. Into a leap. Into a lunge. Until that one mere step turned into one big plunge into a bottomless cliff.
Because he was wrong. There was one thing that stood in his way. In fact, this obstacle stood right in front of him.
You.
"You were a sorcerer." He mumbles. But it sounded like he was trying to reason with himself more than he was trying to talk to you.
You smiled, one that made Geto's chest tighten. Because he knew what that smile meant. It was the exact same smile you wore when you left everything behind to join his cause. That selfless smile that always made him accept every instance when you put him above everything else, even yourself.
He hated that fucking smile.
Because that smile is gonna make him lose you.
"I'm human now." You state, voice clear and convicted. As if you weren't speaking your own death sentence into existence.
His mind went into overdrive. Everything around suddenly felt like tiny little needles pricking his skin. The fire crackling in the distance. The hushed blowing of the wind. The sky slowly turning darker from its previously orange hue. The stark smell of blood carried by the wind.
His heartbeat.
Your heartbeat.
Your words carried a weight that he wished he could be crushed under.
"There might still be a way." He says. And you can see that despite his monotonous voice, his face was the very picture of desperation. He knew it was hopeless, but he was fooling himself. For even just a second longer, he was trying to delay the inevitable.
You smiled again.
You walked closer to him, trying to ignore the pathetic contortion of his face. You wanted to deny that this man was crumbling under the thought of losing you.
You took his hands into yours, placing it just above your chest.
"You know that you have to do this." You say.
"Why?" He asks.
"If you let me live, you won't succeed."
He remains quiet.
He looks at your hand. It was trembling. And it hits him.
You were scared too.
Of course you were. Who wouldn't be? Nobody would ever welcome death with open arms. Maybe those who would never be better in life. But that wasn't you. You were happy. He knew you were happy. Because he made sure of that. For the past year, he made sure you were. He gave you everything he thought you would like. He made sure you were never harmed. He did everything to make sure that you'd never have to dirty your hands for him. And during the rare days when you both would be granted reprieve from Geto's self-imposed burden, he would make sure to live that day with you basked in some semblance of whatever normalcy you both were still afforded.
And yet you weren't begging him to spare you. Why?
Why weren't you trying to convince him to let you live? Because if you did, you wouldn't even have to try. He would have said yes the moment you started asking. He wouldn't even hesitate.
