Kai
Guns were blazing and shooting from every direction. I was taking cover behind a drum, taking a moment to cool off. This was not how I expected things to go. When I told the chief about the extraction, I didn't expect an all-out war to happen then and there. Besides, it didn't look like things were going in our favor, and by that, I mean that Mariano's men were losing.
I was still considered a traitor and criminal, so the chief wasn't holding back to prevent anyone from getting suspicious. The situation had to be so dire that it needed to look like my life was being threatened too.
I and three others were taking cover behind the truck containing the prisoner, the one we were trying to break out. Grant's task force had every possible exit sealed off. I could break us out with my pyro power, but someone had to prepare the getaway car.
The three idiots that were with me, were looking at me as if they were expecting me to come up with a plan. More men were falling and soon all the fire was aimed at us. The truck itself was slowly withering away as dozens of bullets showered down on it, all just to get to us. Did those fools know that I was there?
'We gotta move--' I said only to get cut off by a bullet grazing my side. I quickly pressed a hand over the wound as the cut felt pretty deep. I immediately figured out the trajectory bullet and looked behind us. 'Shit!'
Quickly I enveloped my arm in flames before slamming my hand into the ground, pulling up a wall fire as bullets came raining down on us now from both directions. I was trying my best to regulate the heat of my fire without letting any of the bullets pierce through.
This was not how it was supposed to go. Why would Grant go this far? What was the reason that he had to send a whole army here?
'He's out!' said one of the idiots behind me.
'Huh?' I looked at the truck hearing the loud banging noise coming from inside. The metal got dented from the inside as someone was busy punching through it till the roof of the truck tore open and the individual finally came leaping out.
I could hardly follow his movements with my eyes. All I saw was something jumping out of the truck and over my fire barricade before landing on the other side. He landed with a boom before I got knocked back by the shockwave, groaning when something pierced me through my shoulder.
'Get up rookie,' said Kaien, coming out of the truck and dropping chains on the floor. 'Now that he is out, these fuckers don't stand a chance.'
I frowned and then looked at the person he was referring to. I couldn't believe my eyes.
Bullets were flying at him from every direction and they were bouncing off his skin as if he was indestructible. He then clapped his hands toward the shooters and blasted another shockwave at them which instantly obliterated them.
A pang of guilt hit me. Those men weren't supposed to die...I really didn't think this through when I agreed to the chief's plan. But, I quickly composed myself. Before anyone else got killed, all I had to do was get the getaway car ready.
'Let's move before they call reinforcements!' I said getting up off the ground, ignoring the searing pain around my wounds.
I was trained personally by the chief and the first thing he taught me was how to handle pain.
I managed to find one of Mariano's vans that were still intact...sort of. Only the windshield was broken and the driver was dead. I pulled him out and tossed him out before hopping in and turning on the engine. I waited for everyone to get in and then I stepped on the gas.'Put him down on the seat,' I heard moments before opening my eyes and regaining my consciousness. I hissed when someone pressed a wet cloth against my head and it felt very painful.
My vision was blurry at first, feeling more hands touching me only this time these hands were softer and smaller. A woman's hands. I was slowly coming by till I could see her face.
'Isabelle?' her name escaped my mouth before I properly registered where I was. The last thing I remembered was driving me and the escape crew away and then...
I couldn't remember what happened after that.
'They say this is your first job?' I heard another speak. There was someone else in the room. He was standing in the corner of the room, dressed in a straightjacket with his arms crossed above his chest. 'Damn, they really must not like you.'
'Meaning?'
'Meaning that you should be more careful next time,' Isabelle interjected, holding what looked like a needle in her hand right before I felt it prick my left shoulder. She pressed a hand over my wound to contain the bleeding. I felt pain and the next moment all the pain went away as she began cleaning it first before properly treating it. I didn't know she was a medic. 'I'm sorry. Had I known the risks of this job, I'd never have allowed Richard to send you on that job. My father did it to test you, in which case, you passed. You came back alive and succeeded in your mission.'
'Test?' my head was throbbing. I was having a hard time trying to make sense of what they were saying to me.
'Didn't you notice? Those nutjobs that left with you were all just deadweight. They were also backup incase you did get ambushed. The plan was for you to release me and you were just meant to be meatshields to make sure my plan was a success.' He walked towards me and extended a hand for a handshake. 'My father underestimated you. You managed to pull through and I can vouch for you now. You're officially a member of the team.'
I blinked and shook his hand, now properly registering the new information. I didn't know that was what Mariano had planned for me the moment he was so welcoming when I entered the house with his daughter. I believed that he was happy to have me there, but now I started to question my life choices.
I felt Isabelle tightening a bandaid around my shoulder and upper arm. 'Which was uncalled for.'
'Since when do you care so much about me?' I asked her.
She glared and began working on the wound on my side, not applying any anesthetics there. 'I care about all my clients!' I hissed as the wet cloth felt like it was burning through my flesh. Did she dip that thing into hand sanitizer!? 'Plus you can't repay if you're dead.' Great, and for a moment there I nearly forgot she was a lawyer. Her father was super rich, so she didn't need any money.
I suspected she had other methods of having her clients repay her. I was nothing more than an asset to this family, so I needed to keep that in mind in the future.
'I, on the other hand, owe you a debt,' said the other guy. 'I'll leave Isabelle to finish her work. Maybe you and I can go for drinks? What do you say?'
'He has a head injury, Mario. He is not going anywhere,' said Isabelle, scolding him. 'You should go to your room and have a shower. You stink.'
He chuckled and kissed her cheek. 'I missed you too siss.'
Isabelle scrunched her nose like he was grossing her out, 'Just go.' and then he left the room.
'What happened?' I then asked her, wanting to at least know why I couldn't remember getting into this room and how I got there.
'You passed out while driving. Luckily, Mario saved the car before it crashed,' she said and then patched my head injury. 'You do have a concussion, but nothing that can't heal in a couple of hours. You should rest and don't listen to Mario.'
'He seems like a nice guy...' I mumbled, watching her take the gloves off and packing up her first aid kit.
'Everyone in this family is nice, Kai.' She looked at me again and then carried herself to the door. 'That's what makes us so dangerous.'
