When I arrived at the gym, Luke was already there, warming up. The dull sound of punches hitting the bags filled the air, mingling with the hum of the fluorescent lights and the distant murmur of other students engaged in their exercises. The ring in the center of the gym was empty, a silent invitation to leave behind the worries of the day and focus solely on action.

Luke saw me enter and greeted me with a nod, a slight smile on his lips. "There you are, buddy! Ready to take some hits today?" he asked as he approached the ring.

"Always ready," I replied with a smile. "But maybe today you'll be the one taking a few hits, who knows." I slid my bag under a bench and started warming up as well, doing some stretching and light exercises to loosen up my muscles. Hand-to-hand combat wasn't just a physical challenge but a mental one as well. It required concentration, quick thinking, and the ability to anticipate your opponent's moves. And today, more than ever, I needed that kind of challenge.

After warming up sufficiently, we stepped into the ring. Luke took his stance, with a high and steady guard, ready to begin. I did the same, focusing on his posture, the movements of his shoulders and feet, trying to predict what his first move would be.

The first attack came from him, quick and decisive. A strike aimed at my left side, which I barely managed to dodge, countering with a punch directed at his abdomen. Luke blocked the hit with a swift twist of his torso, turning my push into an opportunity to grab my arm and try to throw me off balance.

Fighting with Luke was always an exercise in balance and strategy. He was strong and agile, but also smart. It wasn't just about who was faster or more powerful, but who could read the opponent better and exploit their weaknesses.

Our training continued with a series of holds, blocks, and counterattacks. Our sneakers scraped against the ring mat, our heavy breaths mingling with the sound of the blows we exchanged. I could feel my muscles working, the sweat sliding down my back, but my mind was finally free of any thoughts. There was no room for anything but the present, for every move and counter-move I had to execute.

Luke threw a punch aimed at my face, and for a moment, I thought I wouldn't be able to dodge it. But at the last second, I managed to sidestep, grabbing his wrist and pulling him toward me to destabilize him. With a fluid motion, I ducked to grab his leg and tried to take him down. I felt the resistance of his muscles, but with one final effort, I managed to push him to the ground, pinning him down with a knee on his chest.

"Nice move," Luke panted, his face flushed from the effort. "But it's not over yet."

I smiled, knowing he wouldn't give up easily. Luke was a natural fighter, and even in training, he never lost his will to win. He hit me with a sudden twist, freeing himself from my hold and getting up with the agility of a feline. Before I could react, he grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me against the ropes of the ring, trying to gain an advantage.

The fight became even more intense, the blows more precise and targeted, as we both tried to land the decisive hit. Our movements were synchronized in a duel that was as much mental as it was physical. Every move, every dodge, every counterattack was a response to what the other was doing, in a silent dialogue that only we could understand.

In the end, after minutes that felt like hours, we stopped. Luke grabbed a water bottle and took a sip, while I leaned against the ropes of the ring, feeling the fatigue in my muscles. It had been a good workout, and I could already feel the benefits on my body and mind.

As we recovered, Luke broke the silence. "You know, I've been thinking about Cate."

His voice was serious, and although we had been friends for a long time, I knew Luke didn't often talk about his personal feelings, especially when it came to relationships. His openness immediately caught my attention.
