The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting an orange glow over the neighborhood as Trevaris walked back toward the house, his mind a tangled mess of frustration and guilt. The streets were quieter now, the playful screams of children fading as they were called in for dinner. He'd spent the past few hours brooding, letting the tension of the argument with Ari simmer in the back of his mind while he tried to focus on the next big move that would get them out of this mess. But no matter how hard he tried, her words echoed in his head, mixing with the doubts that had been gnawing at him for weeks.

When he reached the house, he noticed that Ari's car was gone, but the front door was slightly ajar. He paused on the porch, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the quiet street. The house looked deserted, but he knew better than to assume that meant he was alone. Trevaris pushed the door open carefully, the old hinges creaking in protest. The coolness of the evening air disappeared as the stifling heat inside the house wrapped around him. The stillness was unsettling, the kind that made the creaks in the floorboards sound louder, the groans of the old house more pronounced.

He moved through the narrow hallways, his footsteps slow and deliberate, listening for any sound that might give him clue as to what was going on inside. As he approached the small room that TJ and Nia shared, he heard the familiar voices of his children, a low murmur of conversation that eased some of the tensioned coiled tight in his chest.

Trevaris pushed the door open gently and found his kids sitting on the floor, surrounded by a mess of toys and books. Tj, his five-year-old son, was deeply engrossed in an action figure battle, his hands moving the plastic figures with determined intensity. Nia, barely three, was babbling to herself as she tried to dress a doll in a mismatched outfit, her tiny fingers fumbling with the buttons.

But Ari wasn't there.

Instead, Trevaris noticed his mother, Renae, sitting in the corner, a watchful eye on the children as she folded a pile of their freshly laundered clothes. She looked up when he entered, her expression a mix of mild surprise and guarded concern.

"Didn't expect you back so soon," Renae, said, her voice low but carrying the weight of unspoken questions. "Ari called me to come over and watch the kids. Said she needed some air."

Trevaris nodded, a mix of relief and guilt washing over him. He should have known Ari wouldn't leave their children unattended. But the tension between them had clouded his judgement, making him jump to conclusions.

"Thanks, Ma. You know how things get between us sometimes," he replied, keeping his tone even, though the strain was evident in his voice.

Renae just gave him a look, the kind only a mother could give - a mix of understanding and stern disapproval. "You two need to figure it out, Tre. These kids...they don't need to see all that mess y'all keep throwing at each other."

Trevaris couldn't argue with that. He knew Renae was right. The constant fighting, the mistrust - it wasn't healthy for anyone, least of all TJ and Nia. But it was easier said than done. The life he lived, the choices he made, they didn't leave room for peace at home.

"I know, Ma. I'm trying," he said, though even to his own ears, the words sounded hollow.

Renae didn't push any further. She knew when to let things go, at least for the moment. "Well, I'll leave you to it," she said, rising from the chair. She gathered the folded clothes in her arms and gave him a final searching look before heading toward the door. "And Tre.. don't let these streets take more than you can afford to lose."

Trevaris watched her go, her words, sinking deeper than he'd care to admit. Once she was gone, he turned his attention back to his kids, trying to shake off the heavy thoughts that threatened to pull him under.
