The story takes place in the small (fictional) European country Esmeros, or more precisely in the countries capital Esmer Castle.
It's set in the future, which means some historical events have happened that don't exist today.
The country is mainly ruled monarchically, but there are slight democratic approaches and the king is not the sole decision-maker.
The population is divided into 8 so-called classes.
Only the royal family belongs to the first class and lives in a castle, while the people of the eighth class have no work, live on the streets and are also known as outcasts.
Everyone is born into their class and can only leave it if they marry or have a lot of money to buy their way out.
However, as the classes also dictate jobs and these are distributed in such a way that the lower the class, the worse the job pays, hardly anyone who needs it can buy their way up.
They can't get married either, because although it's not an official rule, it still applies: classes don't mix. Additionally, the country (or more just the King) is definitely not open to anyone (especially his daughter) being gay, or even falling in love with a girl.
