The moon casts a silvery glow over the river, its light dancing on the water's surface. Two wolves stand by the shore, their breaths visible in the cool night air. One wolf, its fur a deep brown, keeps watch, ears twitching at every sound. The other, a mottled gray, lowers its head to drink, lapping up the water with quick, efficient movements. After a moment, they switch, the gray wolf taking up the sentinel's post while the brown wolf drinks.
They move with practiced ease, their senses keen and alert. Just as they are about to leave, a rustle on the opposite shore catches their attention. Three black wolves emerge from the shadows, their eyes gleaming with malevolent intent. Without hesitation, they charge towards the two wolves, their movements swift and aggressive.
The brown and gray wolves growl, their hackles raised. They are larger than their attackers but outnumbered. Assessing their options quickly, they decide to retreat, backing away from the river's edge. The three black wolves, driven by their predatory instincts, follow, splashing into the water and swimming across with powerful strokes.
As the black wolves reach the shore, they are met with a sudden, unexpected ambush. Six other wolves, previously hidden in the underbrush, burst forth, surrounding the attackers. These reinforcements move in a coordinated assault, their growls echoing in the night.
The three black wolves hesitate, realizing too late the trap they have walked into. They attempt to retreat, but it is futile. The circle of wolves tightens around them, cutting off any escape routes.
A massive dark gray wolf, larger than any of the others, steps forward. Its eyes are cold, calculating, and filled with a fierce resolve. With a powerful leap, it closes the distance, its paws hitting the ground with a heavy thud. The black wolves brace themselves, but the sheer force and speed of the gray wolf are overwhelming.
It crashes into the nearest black wolf, knocking it off its feet and pinning it to the ground. The other two black wolves try to fight back, but the ambush has left them disoriented and outmatched. The six surrounding wolves close in, their growls a symphony of dominance and aggression.
The gray wolf, its fur bristling and teeth bared, glares at the intruders. There is no mercy in its gaze, only the fierce protection of its territory and pack. With a final, powerful lunge, it launches at the remaining black wolves, teeth flashing in the moonlight.

I get out of the truck with a sigh, my muscles tense with the barely restrained rage simmering just below the surface. Luke, Olivia, and I have driven an hour away from Gravewick to meet with the neighboring pack, who, after countless ignored requests, finally agreed to a mediated meeting. Theo is still in the hospital, hanging on, but in poor condition. The urge for blood, revenge roils within me, but I know for the safety of our pack, we need to resolve this.
We walk into the Pack Association building, a modern structure with sleek glass walls and a sprawling, well-manicured lawn. The building's facade reflects the overcast sky, casting an eerie, foreboding atmosphere. The lobby is a cavernous space, with high ceilings and minimalist decor, emphasizing efficiency and authority. Every step we take echoes, amplifying our apprehension.
A secretary leads us to a conference room, its decor a strict palette of gray and black. The walls are adorned with framed charters and codes of conduct, a stark reminder of the regulations that govern pack interactions. The table is long and imposing, polished to a high sheen, with neat stacks of documents at each place setting.
Kai James, the alpha of the enemy pack, is already seated, flanked by his second in command, whose name I can never remember. Kai's buzz cut and dark, hostile eyes narrow as he sees us. I pull out the chair directly across from him, holding his stare with a smirk. He knows we have the upper hand.
