connected by the wifi

1. the new neighbour

luke sat on the steps of his house,
trying to get the wifi to work on his
tablet. for some reason, the signal was
weak today, and without the internet,
he was at a loss. just as he was about
to give up, a moving truck pulled up next door. he watched with mild curiosity as
boxes and furniture were unloaded. new neighbors were always interesting, mainly because they usually brought over some baked goods as a welcome gesture. luke's mind drifted to the possibility of cookies.

then, she appeared.

a girl around his age, with long brown hair tied back in a messy ponytail, stepped out of the house with a laptop in one hand and a confused expression on her face. she glanced around, then noticed luke staring at her. luke quickly pretended to fiddle with his tablet, but it was too late.

"hey," she called out, walking over to him. "do you know the wifi password around here? ours isn't set up yet, and i need to check something online." luke looked up, surprised that she was so straightforward. "uh, yeah. it's 'jaylovesscotch24.' but, like, it's really slow today." the girl sighed, typing in the password. "i'm lana, by the way. just moved in." "i'm Luke. so, uh, what are you trying to check?" "my 3D printer design," she said, holding up the laptop. "i was in the middle of something important before we moved. now i can't access the cloud."

luke's eyes widened. "you have a 3D printer? that's awesome! i've always wanted to try one out. what are you printing?" lana's face lit up at his enthusiasm. "just a model i've been working on. it's for a robot that can navigate obstacles using sensors. i've been tinkering with the code for weeks." luke was amazed. this girl was on a whole different level of cool. "i'm not great with coding, but i'm good with gadgets. maybe i can help?" lana smiled. "deal. if you help me set up my printer, i'll teach you some coding."

and just like that, luke found himself with a new friend.

2 hours later

"so uhh.. do you have instagram?" lana
asked, sitting on the edge of the couch
"yeah, gimme ur phone, i'll put it in" luke
smiled.

his eyes lit up - she was so beautiful. then, he opened the comments. "babe..?" luke asks quietly, scratching his head.
"oh that's just what my friends call me. i'm a single pringle" lana says as luke releases a sigh of relief
