the first year of junior brought many changes. though, the biggest one didn't happen at school. it had happened at his home. katsukis grandfather came to live with him. every time he would come home, he would stare out the window and onto the grass. his mom told him he stared like that because he missed grandma. but that was not something that he would ever talk about with katsuki. he wasn't upset. his grandfather never talked about much of anything with him.

that was until you showed up in the local news paper.

"katsuki. may i speak with you?" his grandfather called from the living room

"what do you need?" he stopped in his tracks and stared at him.

"have a seat" the older man gestured to the couch and katsuki sat down. "tell me about your friend y/n l/n"

"y/n. she's not my friend" he scoffed.

"why's that?"

"why do you want to know?" katsuki question back.

his grandfather gave him the paper. you didn't wind up in the masutafu newspaper for being the newest einstein. you got the front page coverage because you refused to climb out of a sycamore tree.

y/n l/n and that stupid sycamore tree. you always though it was god's gift to our little corner of the universe. he remembers how you always asked him to climb the tree with the other kids in your neighbourhood. but he always refused. he didn't want to be around you more than he had to. katsuki always made an excuse not to be with you.

being in that tree was the last thing he needed. he would get dragged right back into second grade.

"katsuki and y/n sitting in a tree"

he would rather eat beans for the rest of his life.

"i think the tree looks particularly beautiful in this light." you said as you stood beside him and izuku. "don't you?"

"well, if by 'beautiful' you mean 'unbelievably ugly', then, yes, i would agree" he scoffed.

you rolled your eyes at him and got on the bus.

"you're just visually challenged." you said with a shrug "i feel sorry for you"

'visually challenged'? he thought. 'visually challenged'?!

from the girl who lived in a house that was the joke of the neighbourhood? there was bushed growing over the windows and weeds all over the place. it bugged his grandfather big time.

as annoying as the yard was to his family, it didn't compare to how annoying you were in that tree. every morning, the kids in the neighbourhood would have to listen to your blow-by-blow traffic report.

katsuki was standing by that oh-so-familiar tree to get to wait for the bus. tsubasa was talking about something that he didn't bother to listen to. so instead, he turned his attention to the tree.

"listen, girl, i'm this close to calling the police. you are trespassing and obstructing progress on a contracted job" a guy in a helmet said. "either you come down, or we're going to cut you down."

"katsuki! you guys, come up here with me" you said from a branch. "they won't cut it down if we're all up here"

"bus, bus, bus." tsubasa said and everyone followed him.

you were frantic. they wanted to cut down your tree. katsuki couldn't understand why the mutant tangle of gnarly branches meant so much to you.

"katsuki, please." you said and he looked back up at you.

he felt bad for you but he wasn't going to skip school for a dumb tree.

"why isn't she your friend katsuki?" his grandfather asked
