The Prologue
Watching the befuddlement of the man before her, kneeling on the ground in wraith of his own mind, Aibek curled her upper lip into a subtle expression of disgust. Examining the paltry figure laid before thy, she stepped closer.
"This, you say, is the man who executed duke vinchester?" Noting the guardsmen behind her, her back turned to them.
"Yes, your highness." A small voice answered, rough and gruffly. A man, clearly in his late thirties or forties.
"Very well. Do tell, how did he do so?" Leaning in slightly to the imprisoned man, she stared at his head. The man had not only refused to look her in the eye, but had yet to answer any questions. A grueling conversation to keep up, when the other provided no help, wasn't it?
Patiently, she acknowledged the guards answer and continued to brainstorm.
The advisors had produced the claim that this odd soul had been from West Maronia, a preposterous idea, though not all too incorrect.
"Now, now, let's not get too hasty here. I'm sure in time, he'll refrain from giving us silence and answer to something." She'd said, just short of three days ago, when the culprit had first been identified. Unfortunately, her idea had proved to be a hassle.
Now, the once impenetrable looking, burly man that we'd started with, looked beaten to a pulp. His figure sagged, his eyebrows furrowed, and yet he still, still would not answer her! Entirely angry about the situation, she'd consulted one advisor whom she rarely did.
The idea had sparked, in one young ladies mind, to read his body language. Why, that was such an obvious thing to do, yet they had yet to do so. If he did not respond to torture, this would be another way.
Now, with a newfound understanding and urgency to the situation, she began asking questions. Questions of who he was, why he was there, and who had, in speculation, hired him. Noting the bodily twitches and tension when she asked a specific question, she deduced a conclusion. Yes, the man had most definitely been hired for the job. Yes, once more, he was appointed by a higher power in West Maronia. West Maronia, the neighboring ally. With this knowledge, it became time to appoint a punishment.
"We will execute him in publicity." She spoke, her head high when she spoke to the higher ups in her courtroom. "For the sake of the public's opinion. A hint of how they will rival when they find the source of their beloved dukes death. Maronia may not appreciate, or in other words, despise, our choice, but it is they who have tainted our treaty already."
With the court agreeing, deciding that it was not only important to send a message with the man, but to also give him the exact treatment of the man he killed. Death, was only to be expected.
Of course, what else, would he be deserving of?
