Awakening from my nap by the sun's glare, I blink against its brightness, feeling it scorch my drowsy eyes.
As I ease myself upright in the chair, a momentary confusion grips me—I question myself, did I fall asleep here without anyone noticing? Why am I here? My brain feels like it was being scrambled more and more and I feel a slight headache.
But as my gaze drifts across the room, I see the 4 kids sleeping peacefully or well as peaceful as it can be when snoring on the floor, reality rushes back in a harrowing tide.
Memories of blood smeared along the corridors and lockers, the piercing cries of children, the stern and shaking voice announcing a school lockdown, and then the indescribable terror of a monster's presence overwhelm me.
The pain throbs in my head harder and harder, it felt like someone was hammering my head over and over with brick or some sort of stone. My breaths feel rapid, it almost felt like my lungs were going to explode with adrenalin.
A wave of dizziness threatens to engulf me.
Holding my head with both of my shaky hands, I steady my breathing,
breath in,
breath out,
breath in,
breath out,
breath in,
breath out.
"I'm ok, I'm ok, I'm ok..." I whisper softly to myself.
I wanted to cry in that moment.
