Mitski held the paper tightly against his heart. It was his brother's death certificate. Shouts and loud noises erupted from his parents' bedroom, and he was afraid. At just 5 years old, he had witnessed his brother's untimely death at the age of 8, and he blamed himself. The yard was a vast stretch of grass, the perfect soccer field for him and his brother. Though he was never the favorite child, he held no grudges against his brother, who loved him dearly.
The ball bounced around his feet as he kicked it hard. It wasn't until his brother went to retrieve it that he realized he had kicked it too far. A loud crash and the screech of tires sent chills down his tiny spine as his parents dashed out the front door. Little Mitski trembled, seeing blood splattered everywhere—on the sidewalk, the road, the grass, and even on the ball. His brother was dead. It was his fault.
The hotel room was small, but it was enough for Mitski to understand the message his parents had left him as they went out to "buy food." They weren't coming back. The orphanage made a low humming sound, most likely the air conditioning giving out. It wasn't old, but it wasn't new either. The feeling of loneliness gnawed at him as tears fell down his cheeks. The door opened, and an unfamiliar woman looked at him with eyes that said "Sorry," even though she remained silent. She gestured for Mitski to follow her, and at that moment, he knew he was never going back home.
