Julie already had a feeling that Snape would dislike her. By the end of the first Potions lesson, she knew she'd been wrong. Snape didn't dislike hee, he hated her.Snape started the class by taking the register, and he paused at her name."Ah yes" he said "Julie Clarke. Our new Celebrity." And when he reached Harry's name he said "Harry Potter, our other celebrity" Malfoy and his friends sniggerd, but quickly stopped after Julie gave them a dirty look.
"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making" Snape began. "As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this magic. I don't except you will really understand the beauty of the softly shimmering cauldron that creep through..."
And Julie had stopped listening. Snape sounded like a poet, but a really bad one. If she had listened to any more of it she would probably start laughing, even though he was kinda creepy.
"Potter!" said Snape loudly and Julie snapped out of her trance. "What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"
Julie looked at Harry, who sat next to her, and he was really confused. She didn't blame him, she's never heard any of the words that Snape just said, but Hermione's hand shot up in the air. Snape ignored it.
"I don't know sir" Harry said quietly. Snape's lips turned into a sneer and he was now looking at Julie who had a terrible feeling, that he was going to ask her a question next.
"Tut Tut- Fame clearly isn't everything. Let's try again, Clarke. Where would you look if you told me to look for a bezoar?" he said
"I don't know, sir" Julie said. She was really annoyed. Why would a teacher try to embarrass someone in front of the whole class? She tried not to look at anyone, especially because Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle were shaking with laughter. Once again, Snape turned his attention to Harry.
"What is the difference between monkshood and woolfsbane?" he asked. At this point, Hermione stood up, her hand stretching towards the dungeon ceiling.
"I don't know" Harry answered. "I think Hermione does though, why don't you try her?"
Julie couldn't help it - her lips curled and she let a small, quiet laugh. A few others joined in, but Snape wasn't amused at all.
"Sit down." he snapped at Hermione. "For your information, Potter, asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. And Clarke, a bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons. As for monkshood and wolfsbane, they are the same plant, which also goes by the name of aconite. Well? Why aren't you all copyiny that down?"
There was a sudden rummaging for quills and parchment. Over the noise, Snape said, "And a point will be taken from Gryffindor house for your cheek, Potter."
Julie looked at him in disbelief. A point from Gryffindor? Harry had seemed to notice that she was really annoyed and whispered to him in an attempt to cheer her up: "He's in a mood, isn't he?"
"Oh, just a little." she said chuckling, while meeting Harrys eyes. For a moment she forgot that they were in the middle of Potions class.
"POTTER! CLARKE!" Snape bellowed, but his voice dropped as he continued. "would you like to share with the class what you're talking about?"
Julie glanced only now realising how close they were sitting. Quickly she moved back, a little embarrassed. Harry's face was flushed too and she couldn't resist the urge to turn tables.
"I just wanted to tell Harry" she stated with an innocent voice. "that you are really pathetic for trying to embarrass us with your questions, because you don't know anything yourself."
All Gryffindors were laughing and Snape looked the angriest he's been since the class started.
"10 Points from Gryffindor! And be thankful that it isn't more" he snapped looking very red. " You are just like your father."
"Thank you, sir" Julie said. She loved being compared to her father - it was her favourite compliment. By now almost everyone was laughing and Snape had a really hard time calming everyone down.
Things didn't improve for the Gryffindors as the potions lesson continued. Snape put them all into pairs to brew up a simple potion to cure boils. To Julie's displeasure she had to work with Malfoy. She privately thought she would have even rather worked with Harry.
Snape swept around in his black cloak, criticising every little thing which annoyed Julie so much. She was counting the minutes until the lesson ended but it seemed so long.
What almost made her lose her temper again, was when Snape said that Malfoy had stewed their horned slugs perfectly and she was just sitting around being useless.
Neville had somehow managed to melt Seamaus cauldron into a twisted blob and the potion was sweeping around the stone floor, burning holes in people shoes.
"Idiot boy!" snarled Snape "I suppose you added the porcupine quills before taking the cauldron off the fire?" Neville whimpered as boils started to pop up all over his nose. Julie felt so sorry for him. She could only imagine how horrible the pain must've been.
"Take him up to the hospital wing" Snape spat at Seamus. Malfoy and his friends started laughing at Neville.
"Shut it" Julie told Malfoy and his friends.
"You know we don't have to be like that" he said "We could just make up and be friends or.."
"Are you insane?" she answered in disbelief. "You really think I would wanna be friends with someone like you? No, thank you."
Malfoy didn't say anything for the rest of the lesson and Julie was very thankful. In the meantime Snape took another point off Gryffindor, because as he said Harry told Neville to add the quills. Harry looked very angry and the mood was very down for the rest of the lesson.
They climed the stairs up the dungeon when Harry caught up with her.
"Better luck next time, eh?" he said with a smirk. She felt her lips twitch.
"Yeah, next time don't get caught talking back to Snape." she responded.
"Like you didn't do the same thing." he shot back, a grin breaking through his frustration.
"True." Julie shrugged grinning.
