Never would Y/n have tought that the
person they hated the most since they were kids, their childhood academic rival, the one person they couldn't stand at all would become their love interest.

The bickering had started since they were kids: being in the same class for 12 years certainly doesnt help developing friendships that much,or at least not in their case for the first years. You're in company of that person so much that you start picking up on their bad habits, until you can't help but notice them anytime they come across you.

That would be the phyloshophy but for some reason they didn't care, if not, it helped them push themselves even further just to win against the other and maybe better themselves in the process.

Still, at first it had been that way for those two aswell, who solely frequented each other because they had a friend in common and, well, were in the same class.

It didn't seem like they had much in common, if not their love for study and passion about volleyball, even though only one of them was actually playing the sport.

But why did they challenge each other relentlessly, even though they tought they couldn't stand each other? The reason is, we don't know. Maybe they found it funny or as entertaining as it can be for six years old.
As though as they always found a reason to argue, you could always catch a glimpse of a small smirk of amusement on little Kuroo's face, being replaced by his usual annoyed expression when his friend noticed; the same would have been for Y/n, masking their amused and entertained expression with a frustrated one in matter of seconds.

Their competitivity wasn't strictly shown just in the ademic field: in fact, they used to challenge each other with nearly anything: from gym classes to who's the best cook, from social relationships to who can sing the best and so on.
Even if they hated to admit so, these continuous banters helped their own relationship develop so much to the point they can't do anything if they're not challenging themselves in some way.

Y/n didn't know when or how they started talking, it was probably around the second or third year of grade school: all they knew was that apparently Kuroo had taken a liking to them, and wouldn't leave them alone for one minute before they came back to annoy them with the same questions/ facts about volleyball all over again.

"How did your test go?"

Asked Tetsurou, 7 years old

"You say first!"

Replied Y/n, 7 years old aswell.

"We'll show each other at the count of three"

Kuroo had a smug expression on his face, hes so sure he did well. He didn't consider that it might be the case for Y/n too.

"Hmpf, we'll see"
replied Y/n, slightly annoyed. They never really liked those comparisons with Kuroo, they found them useless and pointless; however, there was a small hidden part of them who died for those small challenges they did with each other.

"One"
"Two"
"THREE"

They both screamed in unison, way too loud for the small class they were sitting in.
