Alex sat at his desk, the Aether Band snug around his wrist. He stared at it, lost in thought, when Maya walked in, knocking gently on the doorframe.
"You okay, Alex?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he replied, though his voice betrayed him.
Maya's brow furrowed. "What's wrong?"
He sighed deeply. "What if I can't control the Aether Band? What if it turns me into someone I don't want to be?"
Maya stepped closer and gently placed her hand on his shoulder, her gaze locking onto his. "You won't," she said firmly. For the first time, Alex noticed how striking her eyes were, a thought that caught him off guard. Before he could respond, Elias burst into the room, making both of them jump.
"You kids okay?" Elias asked, eyeing them with concern.
"Yeah, we're fine, Elias," Alex replied quickly.
"Good," Elias said, then turned serious. "Listen, Alex, I've got an idea. Have you heard of the Lumen crystal?"
Alex shook his head. "No, why?"
"Well," Elias began, pulling a weathered book from his bag, "apparently, the Lumen crystal can cleanse the darkness in the Aether Band."
Alex shot up from his chair, his worry momentarily forgotten. "Where is he?"
"The Ash Forest," Elias replied.
"That's amazing, right?" Maya chimed in.
"Yeah, but it's not going to be easy," Elias cautioned. "If you want to cleanse that bracelet, it's going to be a tough journey."
"We're doing it," Alex said with resolve.
"Alright then, gear up," Elias ordered. "Come on, Alex," Maya teased, giving him a light punch on the shoulder.
The trio set off, Elias driving them down a dusty dirt road until he pulled over. "We're going to take it on foot from here," he said.
Alex peered out the window. The landscape looked brittle, as if it would shatter underfoot. "Be careful, okay?" Elias warned as they exited the vehicle.
"Got it," Alex replied, feeling the weight of the journey ahead.
As they made their way through the rough terrain, Alex noticed the ground crumbling beneath his feet, revealing a massive cavern below. "This is fun," he muttered sarcastically.
"So, Elias," Alex called out, "what do you actually know about the Voidbringer?"
Elias paused, his expression darkening. "The reason the Voidbringer is such a danger to our world is that it's not just a monster."
"What do you mean?" Alex asked, trying to keep up.
"It can destroy realities," Elias said grimly.
Alex frowned. "That's not in my book."
"Trust me, kid," Elias said with a smirk, "that book doesn't know jack squat."
"And you do, huh?" Alex shot back, half-scoffing.
"Exactly," Elias replied, his smirk growing. "Guess Elias is as old as he looks, huh?" Maya teased, making Alex laugh.
"Alright, guys, listen up," Elias continued. "The Order wants to summon the Voidbringer because they think they can control it. They don't understand how dangerous it really is."
As they climbed higher, Elias began to breathe heavily. "Alright, let's take a break," he suggested, clearly winded.
"Elias, I can still see the truck," Alex pointed out.
