• Shmidt is mrs. Afton's family surname and that's how Michael thought of it when creating the nickname Mike Shmidt when he went to work at FF's. Maybe he even got his name legally changed to his mother's when he turned 18.
• Michael is a mama's boy (he didn't have much of a choice there) but he was always trying to get William's attention. Especially after Clara's death (which was absolutely devastating to him), Michael was misbehaving a lot (maybe as a coping mechanism as well). He sure got his father's attention, but in a very negative way. He was a bad student and got a lot of detentions (and even more punishment at home).
• Michael could also be a psychopath, like William. The chances were 50% anyway. He was not just a bad kid. He was a bad, sadistic, abusive brother, who found pleasure in tormenting Evan. He didn't care about his own brother's feelings and found it funny how he was such a crybaby.
• Michael took after William in every detail, his physical appearance and mentality, except for one thing. He was not a murderer. He never intended to kill Evan. The fact that he tried to "fix" this whole situation his father had caused is not just because he felt bad for his own actions, but mostly because he didn't want to be like William.
