The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the lake house as Emily and Logan prepared for their training session. After their revelation, Logan had been determined to help Emily harness her newfound abilities. But the weight of the unknown loomed over them like a storm cloud, threatening to burst at any moment.
"Okay, Em, let's start simple," Logan said, gesturing to an open space in the living room. "Just focus on the energy inside you and try to channel it."
Emily nodded, but her hands trembled slightly at her sides. She took a deep breath, attempting to calm her racing heart. But no matter how hard she tried, the anxiety bubbled just beneath the surface, ready to spill over.
"Remember, it's just you and me here," Logan reassured her, his voice steady. "There's no pressure."
"Right," she said, forcing a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "No pressure."
As she closed her eyes, she concentrated, trying to find that familiar sensation she felt when the barrier had formed the day before. She searched for the energy inside her, but all she felt was confusion and fear. Panic started to seep in, making it hard to focus.
"Take your time," Logan encouraged, his tone gentle. "Just breathe."
But as she inhaled, the weight of everything—her past, her fears, the uncertainty of her powers—crashed down on her like a wave. The room began to feel smaller, the walls closing in. "Logan, I can't do this!" she exclaimed, her voice rising in pitch.
"Emily, yes, you can. Just try again," he urged, stepping closer.
But the pressure was too much. She squeezed her eyes shut tighter, desperate to push the turmoil away. "I don't understand how to control it! I didn't ask for this! What if I hurt someone? What if I can't control it?"
As she shouted, a surge of energy erupted from her, sending a shockwave through the room. The furniture rattled, and a crackle of energy filled the air. Emily gasped, stepping back, overwhelmed by what she had unleashed.
"Emily!" Logan shouted, steadying himself against the wall. "Calm down!"
But the panic consumed her. "I can't, Logan! I can't!" She clutched her head, tears streaming down her face as she sank to the floor. "I don't know how to make it stop!"
Logan rushed to her side, kneeling down and placing a hand on her shoulder. "Look at me, Em. You're okay. Breathe. Focus on my voice."
But Emily was lost in her chaos, her breaths coming in sharp gasps. "What if I can't control it? What if I hurt someone else? I don't want to be a danger to anyone!"
"Hey," he said softly, stepping closer and taking her hands in his. "You're not a danger. You're still you, and we'll figure this out together. You have to trust me."
"But what if I can't? What if it's too late?" she whispered, panic lacing her voice.
"It's not too late!" he insisted, his voice firm but calming. "You're stronger than this fear. Remember what you did yesterday? You created a shield to protect us. You can do this."
Emily shook her head, her heart racing as doubt clawed at her. "What if I can't control it and it hurts you? I can't stand the thought of hurting you!"
"Em, I have a healing factor," he reminded her, a reassuring smile creeping onto his face. "Even if something goes wrong, I'll be fine. I'm tougher than I look. You can let go of that fear."
She looked up at him, his unwavering confidence giving her a sliver of hope. "You really think I can do this?"
"Absolutely," he said, his gaze steady. "But you have to give yourself grace. Everyone has a breaking point. It's part of the process."
"I don't want to hurt anyone, Logan. I just want to be normal," she whispered, feeling the weight of her powers pressing down on her.
"Normal is overrated," he said, trying to lighten the mood. "You're extraordinary. We'll work through this together, and I promise you will learn to control it. Just give yourself time."
With renewed determination, Emily nodded, wiping away the tears that had streamed down her cheeks. "Okay. I'll try. But I'm scared."
"I know," he replied, offering her a reassuring smile. "Fear is normal. But don't let it define you. We'll face it head-on, just like we've faced everything else."
As she looked into his eyes, the fear slowly began to dissipate, replaced by a flicker of resolve. With Logan beside her, she felt a little less alone in her journey.
"Let's start with something small," Logan said, guiding her to her feet. "Just focus on creating a small shield. I'll be right here. You can do this."
Taking a deep breath, Emily nodded, her heart still racing but clinging to his reassurance. As she closed her eyes again, she focused on the energy within her. It was there, swirling and vibrant, but it felt volatile, like a storm waiting to break. She took a deep breath, visualizing the stream he described, and tried to coax the energy to flow instead of erupt.
Logan remained beside her, his presence a steady anchor. "That's it, Em. Just like that. You've got this."
For a few moments, she felt the energy shift, a small flicker of control sparking inside her. But just as she thought she had a grasp on it, doubt crept back in, and the storm surged anew.
"No, no, no!" she cried, her hands shaking. The room began to tremble again, and Logan instinctively moved to protect her.
"Emily, focus! You're in control!" he shouted, urgency in his voice.
But the anxiety overwhelmed her once more, and she let out a cry of frustration. "I can't! I don't know how to stop it!"
Suddenly, a powerful shockwave erupted from her, shattering a nearby vase and sending it crashing to the floor. The sound echoed through the house, the shards scattering across the room like her shattered confidence.
As the energy dissipated, Emily fell back against the wall, panting heavily, her heart racing. She felt broken, defeated. "I'm sorry, Logan. I can't do this. I can't handle it."
Logan knelt beside her, his expression softening. "Em, look at me," he said gently. "You're not broken. You're learning. We'll take it one step at a time."
"But what if I can't learn? What if I'm just a danger to everyone around me?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
"Then we take it one step at a time," he replied, his tone unwavering. "You have to give yourself grace. You're not alone in this. I'm here, and I won't let you give up."
Emily looked into his eyes, searching for the strength she felt slipping away. "I don't want to hurt anyone, Logan. I just want to be normal."
"You're extraordinary. We'll work through this together, and I promise you will learn to control it. Just give yourself time." he smirked.
