Roper is shuffling the cards for 21 jack, he hands out the cards and chips and sets some in a space for Devin when he's finished clocking out of his shift.
Token looks over at me. "Are you and Devin gettin' to know each other well?" He asks.
"Looked like you guys were talking for a bit before we got here." He adds
"Oh, well, sort of," I reply. "I don't think he likes me."
"Nah man that's not true, he was saying how he was excited for tonight and having a new partner to play with." Token says.
That's strange, then why is he treating me so coldly I wonder?
"What makes you think he doesn't like you?" Chloe asks.
"Well, maybe I was reading too much into it but he basically called me an alcoholic for having a drink and a shot, and just seemed annoyed by me ordering drinks," I respond.
"What!? That's crazy, I'm sure he's just shy. Sometimes he's a bit awkward meeting new people." Roper explains.
"Yeah maybe," I say shrugging it off.
"He'll warm up to you soon I'm sure," Roper adds.
I notice Chloe and Roper exchange glances.
It goes quiet for a second and I break the silence.
"Hey, you guys still need to catch up to me with shots! You all only took one, come on now, two more since I had a drink too." I say jokingly.
"Oh shit, you're right!" Chloe says. "I'll go get some more!"
She stands up and rushes to the bar, I see Devin exiting the bar from his shift and notice In the corner of my eye she grabs Devin's arm and whispers something to him. They are a good six yards away so it's kinda hard to notice. I see Devin shake his head and then she lets go and walks up to the counter to order the shots.
I wonder what she's saying to him. Maybe just saying he needs to be nicer or something. I feel a bit embarrassed at that thought, I don't want to bring drama into their friend group.
I realize the only empty seat is next to me, so Devin makes his way over to his chair and sits down next to me. I hope he isn't feeling too reluctant to sit next to me.
"So Dennis." Roper says, "What's your major?"
"Oh, I'm studying economics, probably going to get into finance when I graduate," I reply.
"Fancy, you must be pretty smart," Roper says.
"Thanks, it's pretty difficult but I enjoy the challenge," I say. "What about you guys?" I ask
Roper responds first. "Medicine, hopefully gonna be a doctor one day. It's quite the process." He says. Chloe returns with a small tray holding shots for everyone and sits down to divide them out.
"I'm doing biology." Token says. "But this bitch over here can't make up her mind." He says Pointing to Chloe giggling. "What? Haven't you changed your major three times now?" He banters.
"Ugh, rude!." She snaps back with a smile setting down the last shot glass. "It's perfectly normal to change majors, and for your information, I'm going into marketing now." She says with sass.
"That all sounds awesome!" I say.
Chloe hands me a shot. "Go on, let loose." She says winking.
Everyone else takes their shots and I follow along with them.
I'm starting to feel a teensy bit drunk now.
"Alright now everyone is here, let's just do a simple round, 5 bucks max each.
We begin a round. I somehow get perfect cards right off the bat. A ten and an ace. The ace can double as a 1 or an 11, and the ten can make that a perfect 21 hand. "I'll stay," I say.
I hear the rest of the group "Hit me." "I'll stay." And so on. The round finishes and we reveal our cards.
"Perfect 21," I say putting my cards face up.
"Damn it!" Token says. "I got 19 I thought for sure I'd win."
I chuckle.
As the night moved on I've racked up a good 65 bucks from playing, only losing once.
We decided to move to another table, challenging a random group we met in the casino to a round of poker, Texas Holdem.
I somehow get very good cards, I stay, and am feeling confident. Devin looks at me, I can tell he's burning his eyes into me trying to get me to crack. No way brother, I've got a full house.
The round comes to a close and I lay my cards revealing a perfect full house, winning the game, and winning a total of 234 dollars.
The group cheers.
"Let's do another round of shots! My buy!" I say cheering.
I get up and glance at the opposing strangers we played. "You guys want some shots? It's the least I could do for handing you your asses." I say sarcastically.
They look at me, a little upset looking, but give in. "Yeah, why not." A man says reluctantly.
I head to the bar and order a round of 10 shots for the group.I'm feeling pretty drunk at this point, we play a couple more casual cheap games of poker and I win 2 out of 3, now racking up a total of $324.
I'm killing it. I notice as the group loosens up more they get more comfortable and crack more jokes and sarcasm. I notice Devin, who has continued to sit next to me despite no assigned seating, has loosened up a bit as well. This makes me happy. I don't want any bad blood in this new friend group I've made. After a while we play a few slot games, Chloe makes a good win gets $50 bucks and taps out. Roper gets a solid $70, and Token unfortunately gets 2 cents. I can't help but laugh. They all tap out and surround me watching me play a slot machine.
The game goes on for a good ten minutes, I concentrate hard, and the group gets more shots and continues to get more drunk. The game ends. Fuck. Total winnings on the slot machine, $5.
They all give a good chuckle and give me some hearty slaps on the back. They begin to walk away making their way to the dining area to relax. Devin stays behind. "Guess you weren't as lucky as you thought." He says laughing.
He gets in a slot machine seat next to me and immediately wins $200 bucks. Holy shit.
"That's how it's done." He says smirking.
I walk over, wobbling as I walk. "Damn, that's crazy," I say. "But watch this."
I stumble back to my chair to the same slot machine. I focus as hard as I can trying to insert my five-dollar bill and begin. Within a minute I get a small jackpot. "230 bucks fuckface!" I say drunkenly. "I'm more lucky than you thought," I add with a hiccup.
"Ain't no way, I can beat that," Devin says with an angry face.
He sits back down to his slot machine and struggles like me, to put in his bill.
He plays for a good two minutes and- "Boom! Suck on that bitch!" I hear him yell.
"300 bucks." He adds.
I have to say I'm impressed. The group is all sitting down eating chicken wings and has no clue that for the both of us, we just won a total of $730 on slots alone. "You ain't that bad bro," I say punching his shoulder.
"Well, I grew up lucky, that's why I work here," Devin responds.
We both wobble back to the group, finding chairs and sitting down. Roper is telling some story and we both sit down to listen.
"A girl and I got drunk at her place one night, everything's going good until she gets a text from her mom saying that she's at the front door of her dorm. So I opened the window, still in my boxers and jumped out, ran half nude through the grass and just kept running until I got home and my roommate had to let me in." He says laughing very loudly.
Everyone laughs, Chloe, chimes in "Been there man but get this, one time I was living with three bitches and they decided it would be funny to hide my bath towels I went to shower and realized my towel was gone and had to fight them butt naked to get them to tell me where they hid them. Still, good friends to this day gotta love them." She says chuckling.
I look down at the table and see more shots and I take one and shoot it down. I'm definitely drunk now. My mouth begins to move without me even noticing. "Oh ThAts RicH," I say drunkenly. "Just yesterday I got home and stripped my clothes off to wash them, and I was standing in my boxers and my roommate saw me and I blushed like crazy and got to the bathroom and realized I had a boner hahahahahahahaha." I laugh so hard it hurts telling the story. I suddenly realized what I was talking about. Oh no, what did I just say?
I look around and they are all staring at me silently.
