THREE YEARS SINCE ISHANI
"NEREUS, STOP HOGGING THE GARLIC BREAD," three voices screamed at once, causing Neo to sheepishly drop the five pieces of bread back into the bowl.
Life sped up after we left school. It was a never-ending cycle of love and heartbreak and hope and failure and discovery.
I wouldn't have traded it for the world. I would never take back all the places I'd visited, people I'd met, and tough decisions that needed to be made. Like living further away from my hometown. There was too much I needed to discover about the world, and it could never be limited to that one city.
Tough decision yes, but also the best one I'd made so far. Seeing my Mum wasn't a problem, she could catch a train to see me every now and then...Although I did miss having her around all the time. Despite that, I'd found a second family for myself.
Aya, Neo, and I made the decision to leave together, curiosity about the world getting the better of us. Over time, we made other friends too. A bunch of them, though I was only close with a few. Cassie––if home was a person, it would be her. And her brother, Axel...Let's just say that he spends more time having roast battles with Neo than actually talking. And a little while later, Solis and Ophelia turned up––'lost souls', Cass and I used to call them. But really and truly, they both taught me more about life, and myself than anyone could have expected.
I treasured each and every one of them with my whole heart. Took care of them willingly and with an open heart, but never, never more than I would take care of myself.
"What's the point of watching a vampire movie if we can't chuck garlic at the screen, may I ask?" Neo scoffed at the rest of us.
"Actually that's not a bad idea," Axel's bored expression switched to one of amusement. "If you idiots are gonna force me to watch this, then we might as well make it entertaining."
"You know it's bad when Axel agrees with Neo," Ophelia whispered, which made Axel chuck popcorn at Solis (he'd never admit it, but he was secretly scared of Ophie. So, there was no way that popcorn was aimed at her). Cassie pressed play on the film to shut everyone up, and Neo and I shared a look.
We made it. We knew we'd made it.
It was time.
I pulled out Ishani's journal and instead of opening it, I flipped to the back cover. With shaking hands, I scribbled.
I lived, Ishani. I lived.
I was proud to say it.
