Obviously, mermaids aren't real. Everyone knows that. No one is actually insane enough to think they actually exist.

Regardless, they're everywhere in the small town of Warragum, situated on the Gold Coast of Australia. Decorating doorframes and postcards, cartoon renditions smiling and waving from the mural on the side of the marine park, printed on T-shirts and beach towels and bucket hats and tote bags; you can find a mermaid anywhere in Warragum if you try hard enough.

Old local legends tell of mermaids living around the mysterious Mako Island located a few k's out to sea from Warragum. Whole groups of them, living peacefully in the waters surrounding the island. Some tales involve them saving children fallen overboard; others warn that they sabotaged fishermen and capsized boats that ventured too close to their island home.

But they're just stupid old stories. Nothing to them but some bored locals who decided to make up some mystery.

Mermaids, merpeople, whatever you want to call them: they certainly aren't real. They certainly don't inhabit Warragum's waters and they certainly don't have anything to do with the three teenagers from that tour group that fell into that weird pool on Mako Island.

And they certainly don't have anything to do with Sydney Fraser. She knows they're just stories; she wouldn't even dream of meeting one, let alone doing something as stupid as falling in love with one.

Right? Right.
