Chapter 2
~ Ava Barton ~
Passenger Princess
"Bad driver, I guess,"
Today was Jobe's match, and excitement fluttered within you. The morning sun poured through your window, bathing your room in a warm, golden glow. You yawned and stretched, before slipping out of bed and making your way to the bathroom for a quick, invigorating shower.
Once you had brushed your teeth, you headed downstairs, the familiar aroma of breakfast guiding your steps. In the kitchen, your mother was busy at the stove, flipping pancakes with practiced ease.
"Good morning, sweetheart," she greeted you with a warm smile as she set a plate of pancakes on the kitchen island. "Are you hungry?"
"No, not really," you replied, returning her smile with a slight one of your own.
"So, are you excited?" she asked, her eyes twinkling with understanding as she turned back to her cooking.
"Yeah, I'm pretty excited to see Jobe play," you said, your voice lifting with enthusiasm at the thought of the match.
"That's not what I meant, sweetheart," she replied, her expression with pure excitement.
You rolled your eyes, recognizing the direction of the conversation. "Mom, not now, please," you said, a wave of sadness washing over you at the thought of your impending departure in just four days.
"Come on, Ava, don't be like that," she persisted gently. "You know we just want the best for you. This is a great opportunity."
"I know," you muttered, acknowledging the truth of her words even as your heart resisted. The opportunity was indeed golden, but leaving Jobe behind felt like an impossible sacrifice.
"Then why are you so upset?" she asked, her gaze steady as she met your eyes.
"It's just—I don't want to leave Jobe behind," you admitted, your voice tinged with sadness. "I'll miss him."
"I know, sweetheart, but you can still visit each other. And besides, you'll make new friends," she reassured you.
"Mom, Jobe is my best friend. I won't just find another one like him," you insisted, your voice firm with conviction.
"Ava, don't be ridiculous," she countered, her tone laced with skepticism. "You know how I feel about footballers. When they get too famous, they'll just forget about you or hurt you."
"Jobe would never hurt me or toss me aside," you replied, frustration creeping into your voice at her unwarranted doubts.
"If you say so," she said, her gaze unwavering. "But don't say I didn't warn you."
You scoffed and made your way upstairs. You laid in your bed staring up at the ceiling until your phone buzzed.
You picked it up and immediately a smile formed on your face.
