"Tooru! Dinner's ready!" a woman in her early 40's called out her son who was currently resting on his futon in his room, thinking about various things.
"Coming, kaa-chan," he responded and got up. He descended the stairs and went straight to their rectangular low dining table and squatted down on one of the zabutons.
The Oikawa family home was a 2-story traditional Japanese-style house. It consists of 3 bedrooms, the other 2 for his parents and his sister who got married and moved out. They have a small porch with his mother's well-taken care bonsais, living room, kitchen, and bathroom which serve as their common place inside the humble abode.
"Oh! What a big feast today, kaa-chan! What's the occasion?" Tooru looked to his mother who was seated at the end of the table and questioned.
"We're the occasion," a voice responded on behalf of his mother.
"Nee-chan! Takeru! Why are you here? You were not here this morning when I left for volleyball practice."
"This is my home too, you know," a woman in her late 20's showed up to the dining room, along with her 7-year-old son named Takeru. They both sat down across Tooru.
"I mean, what about Takashi-niisan? Is he here too?" he further asked, making the lady roll her eyes.
"Don't mention that name to me," she sounded irritated.
"Tokiko and Takashi-san had a fight, so she and Takeru are going to stay here for a while until they make up," their mother relayed the news.
"I'm going to divorce him! Takeru is more than enough for me," she hugged her son who was sitting beside her while fake crying.
"Mom, that's embarrassing," Takeru tried to push her away.
"Why? Takashi-niisan is so nice and gentle. Nee-chan, you're the one who should change your attitude," Tooru pressed further the topic.
"As if you're one to talk. Just so you know, you have the worst personality between us," Tokiko retorted.
"Excuse me? Can you please stop telling lies in this home?" Tooru was growing annoyed.
"That's a fact."
"It's not."
"It is."
"Stop that, you two," their mother cut off their bickering. "The food will start getting cold, let's eat."
"Itadakimasu," they all said in unison whilst holding each of their chopsticks.
"By the way, where's tou-san?" asked Tokiko.
"He is on a business trip in Kyoto. He'll be back in 3 days," their mother replied.
"I see."
"Come to think of it, I feel like I may have forgotten to tell you something."
"What is it, kaa-chan?"
"Oh, well," Oikawa okaa-san just brushed it off.
