Chapter 5: Echoes of the Past

The aftermath of the attack leaves Alex and Adrian on edge. While they try to return to their routine, the lingering threat looms over them. It's during this time that a ghost from Alex's past resurfaces: Ryan, his ex-boyfriend.One evening, while Adrian is at a business meeting, Alex receives a call from an unknown number. Against his better judgment, he answers, and his heart skips a beat when he hears Ryan's voice."Alex, it's been a while."Alex's grip tightens on his phone. "What do you want, Ryan?""I just wanted to see how you're doing. I heard you've moved on...with a much older man."Alex's blood boils at the smug tone in Ryan's voice. "That's none of your business.""Come on, Alex," Ryan continues, unfazed. "You know I'm just looking out for you. You're playing a dangerous game with this guy. Are you sure he's worth it?""He's worth everything," Alex snaps before hanging up. He takes a deep breath, trying to shake off the unease that Ryan's call has stirred.Later that night, Adrian returns home to find Alex pacing the living room. "What's wrong?" Adrian asks, noticing the tension in Alex's posture."Ryan called me," Alex admits, looking troubled. "He's trying to mess with my head, but I won't let him."Adrian's expression darkens. "Ryan? The ex who hurt you?""Yeah. He's probably just jealous, but still..." Alex trails off, unsure how to express the fear that Ryan might cause problems for them.Adrian crosses the room and takes Alex's hands in his. "You don't need to worry about him. I'll make sure he stays out of our lives.""But what if he tries to hurt you?" Alex asks, his voice barely above a whisper.Adrian pulls Alex into a tight embrace. "He won't get the chance. We're in this together, remember?"Alex nods, feeling comforted by Adrian's strength. They share a tender kiss, reaffirming their commitment to each other.
