it happened again last night.
y/n had woken up in the middle of the night, alone, in a cold sweat, and in fear of the weeks to come.
the last time she had such a bad dream, her boyfriend came home the next night with news that their friend had been murdered.
however, the most memorable time that it happened was the night she found out about the death of Touya Todoroki.
y/n l/n, like the majority of the population, developed a quirk by the time she was five years old. unfortunately, this quirk was not a very flashy one. randomly, whenever y/n is asleep, a premonition of some sort will appear before her eyes. though, this vision is not set in stone in ways that other quirks are in terms of predicting the future. the vision is purely dependent on the actions of those involved, meaning they can be changed with enough work.
currently, y/n was spamming dabi's phone, asking him to come home as soon as possible. she knew it was a long shot. he hadn't been back to her apartment in weeks, the league had been busy.
luckily for y/n, he responded saying that he'd be there as soon as he could.
in the meantime, she decided to freshen up in the shower. she hated the feeling of sweat on her body. by the time she had finished up and changed, dabi made his way home.
"i'm home," dabi announced as he locked the door. y/n made her way to her boyfriend, throwing her arms around him and tightly hugging him. dabi smiled as he returned the hug. "did someone miss me?"
"baby," y/n looked up at her boyfriend with tired eyes. dabi frowned as he turned his head. "we gotta talk."
"no way you called me over to break up with me."
y/n rolled her eyes and shoved her boyfriend off of her, causing him to laugh.
"i'm being serious. i have another bad feeling," y/n started. "i think you should run while you still can."
"not this shit again," dabi groaned, making his way further into the apartment. "i told you already, i can't leave. i have to finish what i started."
"the heroes are finishing it before you can," y/n spit out. it struck a nerve, just like she knew it would. "you've already lost people! i don't want you to be next!"
"we can't just let them die for nothing," dabi tried not to raise his voice, but it was growing difficult not to.
"i just, i don't wanna do this anymore! i hate worrying about you."
"what the fuck is that supposed to mean," dabi took a few steps toward y/n, who was now avoiding eye contact. "are you actually trying to break up with me right now?"
"fuck, dabi, no! i saw you fucking die!"
dabi stared into y/n's eyes, which had glossed over.
"are you serious?"
"i've never been more serious in my fucking life."
dabi nods, running his hand over his mouth as he looks around their apartment.
dabi had come to terms with his mortality years ago. he had even been one to test it time and time again.
but now? it was different. he wasn't just living for himself anymore.
he was living for you.
"fuck, okay," dabi finally replied after he took a deep breath. y/n couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"okay? you can't be serious," y/n scoffed. the tears had begun to fall at this point. "i'm talking about losing the love of my life and all you have to say is okay!?"
dabi's face softened as he looked at y/n. he tried to pull her into a hug, but she pushed back.
"c'mon, you can't just accept it."
"i can, but i won't," dabi pulled her into a hug again, this time succeeded. "if you don't want me to, i won't."
y/n didn't reply. she hid her face in the side of dabi's neck as she cried. dabi rubbed her back as he planted a soft kiss on her shoulder.
"why don't we go to bed?" dabi whispered.
"okay," y/n said in between sniffles. dabi nodded and kissed her shoulder once more before leading her into their bedroom. "go shower first. no outside clothes on the bed."
y/n watched dabi as he grabbed clothes from the drawer and walked towards the bathroom. she wished she spent more time looking at his body, memorizing it
now all she could see when she imagined what he looked like was his dead body.
eventually, dabi came back to the bedroom, now in shorts and a tank top.
"c'mere," y/n said as she held her arms wide open. dabi smiled as he got into bed, laying down on his side so he could spoon y/n.
"i wanna hold you," dabi mumbled as he pulled y/n in closer to his chest. "just for a while."
"you could do whatever you want to me," y/n replied, which caused both of them to laugh. dabi pressed a kiss onto y/n's cheek, running his hand alongside y/n's body.
"i love you, you know."
"yeah," y/n grabbed dabi's hand and pulled it towards her mouth so she could press a kiss into it. "i know. i love you more."
dabi smiled and mumbled a quick reply before dozing off, leaving y/n to wonder when the last time he properly slept was.
as dabi enjoyed his beauty sleep, y/n couldn't find it in her to go to bed. how could she? she just couldn't.
not when all she saw behind her eyelids was dabi burnt to death, lying on the ground. it was the same image she saw before she called dabi back home.
but this time, he's smiling. before he came home, he was lying lifeless on the ground.
y/n didn't want to get her hopes up, not yet at least. but maybe, just maybe, he'd make it out of this alive.
eventually, after basking in the presence of her boyfriend, she tried to push the thought to the back of her head as she held onto her boyfriend tightly. maybe if she held on tight enough he wouldn't leave her. maybe if she held on for a little longer she'd be able to predict a different outcome.
