"I never thought this day would come...." Kate says, tearing up while holding the bouquet of daisies in her hands.
"I never saw this coming either, but here we are...." I say to her, as I look at her reflection in the mirror, whilst the hair stylist puts the veil onto my hair, and the make-up artist adds the last few touches on my face.
"Your parents would be so happy for you right now, Syl." Vivian says to me, her teary eyes beaming with happiness as she's helping me put on my jewelry.
"Well, I didn't make it this far in life for them to be dissapointed." I smirk at Vivian, as I look at my engagement ring.
Growing up in foster homes after foster homes, definitely made me independent in every way possible. When you have to switch schools every year, it's certainly hard to maintain relationships, let alone a boyfriend. It taught me that nothing is permanent so don't get too attached to everything, cause it will hurt like hell when you have to lose it. It's better to focus on yourself, than caring about other people when one day you won't even see them anymore.
That's what happened to my parents anyway. One day they took me to Disneyland, and the next thing I know, I woke up in a hospital with CPS agents surrounding the hospital bed, informing a seven year old her parents died because some drunk bastard went through a red light. Shit happens, so don't get attached.
That all changed when I turned eighteen, I finally got to decide where I would go and stay, none of that CPS knows best bullshit anymore. Thankfully, the foster family I was placed with was kind enough to give me stability, they offered to house me until I graduated highschool. That gave me enough time to save up for a car, and get a scholarship to my dream school, where I met Kate and Vivian.
Vivian is the type of person who could turn even the most mundane tasks into an adventure. Whether it was a spontaneous road trip or a late-night dance party in our tiny dorm room, she had a knack for infusing every moment with a sense of excitement and spontaneity. She was the kind of person who refused to let setbacks hold her back, always finding a way to turn adversity into opportunity.
Kate, on the other hand, possesses a quiet strength that was both comforting and reassuring. She had a way of grounding us, keeping us anchored during life's storms with her steady presence and unwavering support. While Vivian encourages me to embrace the fucked up things in life, Kate reminds me of the importance of finding peace and stability within myself.
"And..., you are all done, what do you think?" The make-up artist asks me, as she looks at my reflection in the mirror.
"You did a fucking bang up job." Vivian says to her, making her and everyone in the room laugh as she puts her hands on my shoulders.
"Yeah, I agree, thank you so much guys." I say to the glam team as they are starting to pack up their tools.
"I still don't like Luke by the way." Vivian blurts out.
"Viv, you promised not to do this." Kate warns her
"Viv, I don't expect you to, besides I need you on my side if he screws up." I interjected, trying to diffuse the tension with a light chuckle.
"Yeah, but you really don't think it's weird that he doesn't wanna talk about his family, like at all. You literally bared your life for him, don't you think you deserve the same from him? " Vivian protested, crossing her arms over her chest. "I just don't want to see you get hurt, Syl."
I reach out and take her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "I appreciate your concern, Viv, I really do. But Luke's different. He's been there for me in ways nobody else has. He's seen me at my worst and still chooses to love me every day."
Vivian softens at my words, her expression reflecting a mix of concern and understanding. "I just want you to be happy, Syl. Promise me you'll always put yourself first, no matter what."
"I promise," I replied, sincerity ringing in my voice. "But right now, I'm the happiest I've ever been. And I owe a lot of that to Luke."
I'm going to be married to the love of my life today, in approximately an hour. Not that me and Luke haven't been living together the past year, but it is definitely nice to make it official. He called me last night as Kate and Anna forbade him to see me the night before our wedding. He said he can't wait to be Mr. Marino.
We discussed which of our last names we're gonna take, but he insisted on taking mine. I didn't try to change his mind about that. With the way he responds every time I ask him about his family, he's definitely not very fond of them. I mean, he wouldn't have run away at fourteen and spent four years in an orphanage if they were nice to him right?
It was a chance encounter in our Econ class during our freshman year of college. I remember sitting in the back, trying to blend into the sea of faces, when he walked in, looking just as lost as I felt. I almost missed the class if it weren't for Kate practically dragging me there. We struck up a conversation over Walshe's god awful writing, and from that moment on, we clicked. Luke had a quiet strength about him that drew me in, a sense of resilience that mirrored my own journey. Despite the dreadful things he went through, he carried himself with a quiet dignity that I found both intriguing and comforting.
As the final preparations for the wedding fall into place, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible people who have come into my life. From the chaos of my childhood to the stability of my foster family, and now to the unconditional love of my friends, I have been blessed in more ways than I could count.
As I take one last look in the mirror, adjusting the veil on my head and smoothing out the fabric of my dress, I feel a surge of excitement and anticipation coursing through my veins. Today is the beginning of a new chapter, a chapter filled with love, laughter, and the promise of a future brighter than I ever dared to imagine. And with Luke by my side, I know that whatever challenges lay ahead, we would face them together, as a family.
"Well..., let's get me on the aisle bitches" I casually toss out with a smirk while looking at my two best friends as they laugh at my remark.
