Under the soft glow of a streetlamp, the world outside seemed still, as if holding its breath, waiting for the inevitable heartache to unfold. The night was heavy with tension, the kind that settles deep into your bones, making every breath feel like a struggle. Inside a small, dimly lit apartment, Chaeyoung sat on the edge of the couch, her fingers trembling as she fiddled with her phone. She wasn't even sure why she was waiting. Maybe it was hope, a foolish, desperate hope that somehow things could be different.
The silence in the room was oppressive, the kind that made you feel like you were drowning. Every second felt like an eternity, each tick of the clock a reminder that time was slipping away, taking with it any chance of turning back. Her heart pounded in her chest, a relentless rhythm that matched the turmoil in her mind. She wanted to call Jennie, to hear her voice, to ask her why she had let things spiral out of control. But she knew better. She knew that some questions were better left unanswered, that some wounds were too deep to heal.
Jennie had always been a mystery to her, a beautiful enigma that she could never quite unravel. From the moment they met, there was a connection, an unspoken understanding that drew them together. But there was also a distance, a wall that Jennie had built around herself, one that Chaeyoung could never fully breach. It was like trying to hold onto water, the more she tried to grasp it, the more it slipped through her fingers.
She remembered the way Jennie used to look at her, the way her eyes would linger just a little too long, the way her breath would catch in her throat when their hands accidentally brushed. It was in those moments that Chaeyoung felt something more, something deeper than friendship. But Jennie never said anything, never gave her any indication that she felt the same. And so, Chaeyoung kept her feelings hidden, locked away in a corner of her heart where they couldn't hurt her.
But everything changed when Jennie met him.
Chaeyoung could still remember the first time she saw them together, the way Jennie's face lit up when she was with him, the way she laughed so easily, so freely. It was a laugh that Chaeyoung hadn't heard in a long time, not since they had first become friends. It was then that she realized she had lost her, that whatever connection they once had was gone, replaced by something new, something that didn't include her.
The days that followed were a blur of sleepless nights and endless tears. Chaeyoung tried to move on, to be happy for Jennie, to accept that she wasn't the one who made her smile like that. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness, the gnawing ache in her chest that refused to go away. It was as if a part of her had been ripped away, leaving behind a gaping hole that nothing could fill.
And then, just when she thought she couldn't take it anymore, Jennie came back.
It was late, almost two in the morning, when Jennie showed up at her door, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen, her face pale and drawn. Chaeyoung knew something was wrong the moment she saw her, knew that whatever Jennie was about to say would change everything.
"Can I come in?" Jennie asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Chaeyoung nodded, stepping aside to let her in. She watched as Jennie walked into the living room, her movements slow and deliberate, like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She followed her, her heart pounding in her chest, a sense of dread settling over her like a heavy blanket.
Jennie sat down on the couch, her hands trembling as she fidgeted with the hem of her shirt. Chaeyoung sat beside her, close enough to offer comfort but not so close that it would make Jennie uncomfortable. She waited, giving Jennie the time she needed to gather her thoughts.
"I... I don't know how to say this," Jennie began, her voice shaky. "But I need to tell you something. I need to be honest with you, because... because it's killing me."
