dei, can I see your hands?

When they found their way back to camp, Deianira crashed into Bane's arms and cried.

Bane's eyes widen in surprise as she sees her sister, pale and shaken, and with blood on her hands. She holds her, wrapping her strong arms around her and lets her cry. "Dei, what happened? Are you hurt?" she asks, searching her body for any signs of injury.

Deianira said nothing, and clinged tighter to her.

Bane's concern deepens but she says nothing else, simply holding her sister, her hands rubbing circles into her back. She can feel Deianira shaking, hear her ragged breathing. Whatever happened, it had left her deeply shaken.

Bane glances up at Annabeth, who was standing to the side with her eyebrows creased in worry. Annabeth shrugs, telling Bane that even she had no idea what had happened.

The days passed quickly after that. Percy returned to camp after finding his mother back at their apartment, and the camp celebrated their successful quest. But Deianira didn't attend the celebrations, and Percy couldn't swallow the lump in his throat.

Percy felt a strange sense of guilt hanging over him as the days passed by. The camp was celebrating and all he could think about was the look on Deianira's face when he'd found her on the beach. But every time he tried to approach her, to ask her what had happened, she'd avoid him, slipping out of his reach as if she could sense his intent.

She stayed locked up in her room in the big house, the only sign of her living the light that shined from her windows the whole night.

The days turned into weeks, and still, Deianira kept herself isolated. She would only come out to eat, her eyes downcast and refusing to meet anyone's gaze, especially Percy. The other campers were concerned too, whispering about the distant look in her eyes and the way she flinched away from any physical contact.

One night, Percy could no longer stand it. He waited until late into the night, until the camp was mostly quiet, and slipped into the Big House.

His footsteps were soft on the creaky wooden floors, each step bringing him closer to the door of Deianira's room. He paused for a moment outside her door, gathering his courage before gently knocking.
