Serena
"You need to call me back immediately," I hissed into the phone, peering out at the street from behind the gauzy white curtains of the townhouse that I had shared with Noah.
I tossed my cell on the couch after leaving the voicemail for Hunter, the man I had hired to be Noah's decoy in Australia, and began biting my freshly manicured nails.
A black SUV slowly crept down the road for the fifth time that day and my palms were beginning to sweat. I was already on edge from an interaction earlier in the morning when Noah's brother, Brad, had unexpectedly dropped by seeking to speak to his sibling and the mysterious vehicle didn't help to calm me.
Brad had wanted to discuss stocks with Noah, and I scrambled to make an excuse as to why he wasn't home yet from his business trip.
"Oh...um...Noah's still in Australia," I lied, fiddling with the petals of a white lily in the foyer.
Brad's shoulders sagged. "Still? What is this? His second week there? My brother's trips never last this long."
"I guess there was some sort of emergency that came up," I replied, waving him off and laughing. "It's so hard for me to follow all that technical lingo so I'm afraid I'm not able to provide much more detail than that."
"I see," he replied slowly, eyeing me. "Well, have him call me when you hear from him. It's urgent. There's been some suspicious movements in the stocks and well..." He paused. "Just have him call me, alright?"
"Sure," I agreed.
Brad's arrival had been a close call in a delicate time when I couldn't afford to make a singular error. So, when my cell let out an abrupt ring, I jumped and quickly pressed talk.
"Hunter," I rushed out, trying to keep the panic from my voice. "Where are you? The deal was that you would keep your phone on you at all times and answer whenever I called."
"I'm just enjoying a cocktail by the pool," he answered nonchalantly.
"The public or private one?" I pressed.
"Private. I don't need kids shrieking in my ears while I'm trying to relax,"
I pinched the bridge of my nose, closing my eyes tightly shut. "Hunter..." I ground out through clenched teeth, doing my best to keep my patience in check. "The purpose of your visit to Australia is not to go on a vacation, it's to be seen and right now, I need you to make an appearance."
"What's going on?" His carefree tone was instantly replaced with an edge of concern.
"I think people are beginning to suspect that something isn't right with Noah." I glanced out the window again and trembled at the sight of the SUV making another round.
He sighed loudly and I heard rustling from the other end. "Alright, Serena. Just relax, you hear? Everything will be okay."
Easy for you to say when you have a handsome sum of money coming your way. But wasn't that the answer to all problems?
"Then do the job that I'm paying you for and pretend to be Noah!" I snapped. "Make another withdrawal from the ATM if you have to. I don't care!"
"Fine," he muttered. "I'll go change into his clothes right now and head out, making sure to be filmed on the hotel lobby's security cameras."
"Thank you," I replied, exhaling the breath that I had been holding inside of me.
I pressed the end button and collapsed down onto a chair at the dining room table, eyeing the polished floorboards where Noah's dead body had been sprawled out only days prior.
