**Dragon Quest 35: The War of Storms (Continued)**

After their audience with the King and Queen, Maverick and his crew made their way back to their headquarters, a sprawling fortress nestled within the forest. The journey back was quiet, each member of the crew lost in their own thoughts about the mission that lay ahead. The weight of their new responsibility hung over them like the ever-present storm clouds.

Once they arrived at their fortress, Maverick decided they should explore the surrounding area for any signs of unusual activity. They had to be vigilant, given the King and Queen's warnings.

The forest around their fortress was dense and full of life, yet today, it felt different. The rain had softened to a drizzle, and a fog began to roll in, making the ancient trees look eerie and otherworldly. The crew spread out, checking for any signs of monsters or disturbances in the area.

As Maverick ventured deeper into the woods, he heard a faint, distressed braying echo through the mist. Curious, he signaled to his crew, and they followed the sound until they came upon a small clearing. There, tangled in a thick patch of thorny vines, was a grey donkey. Its eyes were wide with fear, and it struggled to free itself, braying pitifully.

"Hold on, little guy," Maverick said, sheathing his sword and moving carefully towards the creature. "We'll get you out of there."

One of his crew members, a healer named Lyra, knelt down beside the donkey and began to carefully untangle the vines. As they worked to free the creature, Maverick noticed something strange—this was no ordinary donkey. Its fur seemed to shimmer slightly in the dim light, and its eyes held an unusual intelligence.

Finally, after what felt like hours, the donkey was free. It stood up, shook off the last of the vines, and looked at Maverick and his crew with an expression that was almost...grateful.

"Thank you," the donkey said suddenly, startling everyone.

The crew jumped back, weapons drawn, staring at the donkey in shock. Talking animals were rare, even in a world filled with monsters and magic.

The donkey blinked, as if realizing he had surprised them. "Oh, sorry about that. I forget that most people don't expect a talking donkey. My name is Sir Nibbles, and I owe you all my life."

"Sir... Nibbles?" Maverick repeated, raising an eyebrow.

"That's right!" The donkey nodded proudly, his voice a strange mix of silly and serious. "And before you ask, yes, I am indeed ancient. I’ve been around for centuries, cursed to wander these woods until someone with a pure heart could free me."

"Centuries?" Lyra asked, her curiosity piqued. "What happened to you?"

"It's a long story," Sir Nibbles replied, his tone growing more serious. "But to make it short, I was once a mighty warrior in the service of a great king. I fought in many battles, earning the title of 'Sir' for my bravery. But I was cursed by a dark sorcerer to live as a donkey until someone pure of heart freed me from my prison. I’ve been stuck like this ever since, wandering the land, hoping for the day someone like you would come along."

Maverick and his crew exchanged looks. It wasn’t every day they encountered a talking, ancient donkey, much less one with such a story.

"So, what happens now?" Maverick asked, sheathing his weapon again.

Sir Nibbles grinned—a surprisingly dignified expression for a donkey. "Now, I’m at your service. I may not be as powerful as I once was, but I still have knowledge of the old ways, and I know these lands better than anyone. If you’ll have me, I’d like to join your team."

Maverick considered this for a moment. The King and Queen had warned them that they would need all the help they could get in the battles to come, and having an ancient, wise—if somewhat quirky—companion might be just what they needed.

"Alright, Sir Nibbles," Maverick said with a smile. "Welcome to the crew."

The donkey nodded his head solemnly. "I won’t let you down."

As the crew made their way back to the fortress, Sir Nibbles trotted along beside them, already sharing tales of ancient battles and hidden treasures that might aid them on their quest. It was clear that despite his odd appearance, he was a valuable addition to the team.

And so, the real story began in earnest. With their new companion, Sir Nibbles, by their side, Maverick and his crew set out to face the challenges that awaited them, ready to protect their world from the darkness that threatened to consume it. The adventure was only just beginning.
