Whatever it was that Luke gave her that day, the pink shiny stuff in that bottle, it had actually helped. Bane had freaked the first time she heard that Luke had given her something strange, but Ambrose had reassured them both that it was a legitimate sleeping remedy.

Deianira didn't really care about the details, as long as it helped. She slept dreamless for months, and if she did dream, it was always the same one. She'd be picking strawberries in the strawberry fields with the nymphs and satyrs. By the time summer rolled around again, and Percy was due back to camp any day now, she'd been doing better.

The date they went on for her birthday back in march always found it's way into her thoughts, whether it for a fleeting moment or Silena and her siblings asked to hear the story again for the hundredth time. She could still feel the way he kissed her even now, like sunlight through the windows on a fresh morning.

The only negative thing, if she could really call it that, was the fact that she'd started sleepwalking. Bane had found her half a dozen times standing outside the Aphrodite cabin in the middle of the night, completely out of it, or walking around like she was looking for something she'd lost.

But one thing Deianira had learnt as a demigod, is that goods things had to end.

Her end came in the form of a nightmare, the first nightmare she'd had since last summer, when she went on the quest with Percy, Annabeth and Grover. After being free from them for so long, it was much more unnerving than they used to be.

The nightmare started like her dreams recently did. She'd find herself in the strawberry fields, her hair, which had grown down to her shoulder blades now, was loose and shifting in the wind, her white dress stark against the green of the bushes. She was picking strawberries, piling them up in a woven basket at her feet, and humming something to herself. Unlike most demigods, she'd never been aware when she was dreaming.

The nightmare started when she saw something moving in the corner of her eye. It was fleeting darkness, but it caught her attention instantly. She pauses her picking and turns to look, but finds nothing but trees and fields around her. With a shrug she turns back to her picking. Her humming picks up again.

It stops abruptly when she feels a sudden presence behind her. It's breathing down her neck, making her skin crawl. Her instincts make her turn before she can stop herself, but nerves twist her gut when she finds no one there. Instead, in the distance, near the boundary line of camp, she sees that flicker of darkness again.
