Even though I'm supposed to stay away because of the little blonde fucker being with Noli now, I can't help drive past her store twice a day in the hopes of seeing her through the window. Him, I don't want to see. So far, slowing way down as I cruised past the large windows of her store, I'd seen her twelve times. Him, I hadn't seen once.

If I thought the six months without Magnolia were hell, the thought of the rest of my life without her is unbearable. When I found myself cruising past her place several times a night, I knew I needed to be busier so I didn't become a stalker, so I wasn't tempted to track down the blonde asshole and introduce him to my fists or help him meet an untimely end. That'd make me happy, but I knew it would hurt Noli, so I resisted the impulse for her sake.

Since I had too much time on my hands, I met with Butcher and after coming away from a one-on-one meeting with him, I'm pretty sure I'd been looking into the eyes of a psychopath. When I'd called, he told me to meet him at some abandoned warehouse two hours away. Knowing his reputation, there was a fifty-fifty chance he'd kill me there, but I went anyway.

"You ready to be Mayhem?" he asked. His deep voice was inflectionless, and he could have been asking if I was enjoying the day or how I preferred to die.

"Yeah."

"I'm not going to make you prospect for a year."

I'd prospected for my old MC and that was a year of shit so this was the best news I'd had in a long time. Although I hadn't been looking forward to prospecting, I would have done it.

"Obliged."

"Seems like I should get something for a concession like that."

Oh, shit. Maybe he was going to kill me after all. Or chop off a few body parts.

He shrugged out of his cut. "We fight for ten minutes, then you're Mayhem."

I barely had time to get out of my jacket before he swung at me. I moved back just in time, then swung back. For a monster-sized fucker, he was fast as the lightning flashing around us, and it got seriously bloody quick. Even though I was an excellent fighter, Butcher was better. For every two hits he landed, I got in one, which pissed me off, so I just said fuck it and let loose my anger at myself for losing Noli and took it out on him. That seemed to make a difference the last five minutes of the fight, until Butcher, moving so fast it shocked me, grabbed me by the shirt and showed me his eyes.

Dead. Lifeless.

Then he threw me against the wall and walked over to me. Blood dripped from his nose and his mouth as he looked down at me.

"Stand up," he said unnecessarily since I was already getting up. I was pretty certain one of my ribs was broken. That fucker made every hit count.

"Welcome to Mayhem. No one in the club knows about me or the fucking Fae. All they know is I can tell when someone's telling the truth or not. You say nothing or you'll die."

"I wouldn't say anything, even without the threats. I don't normally skip around telling people that fairies exist."

He looked at my eyes, then nodded.

"I'm sending you to Shadow for a couple of weeks to learn the books. He's president of our new chapter, but he's still handling the money, too, and I want his focus on just being prez, so make it happen as soon as you can."

"Got it. I need to get some things set with my business first."

"Get it handled fast. We got guys who can fill in for you, oversee shit while you're with Shadow."
