Chapter 3

Our principal, Mrs Santos had assembled all the students in my grade that morning for an important announcement. All the students involved matched to the students hall. Mrs Santos arrived promptly and climbed to the podium.

"You all will going on a two weeks excursion to some part of Oceania, Melanesia, where you will be given some leadership training. Go to the AD block for proper enquires and date of departure" That was it. Mrs Santos was gone as quickly as she came. She was a woman of few words.

The news was welcomed with mixed feelings. Who wouldn't be excited leaving two weeks of rigorous school activities, but on the sad part, I am getting goose bumps just thinking of the trip.

I and Amber went to the AD block, got the necessary information and left. The date of the departure was in two days so everything had to be done in a hurry

"Hi, Cathy" it was Henry.

"Hi Henry" I replied, forcing a smile.

"Mind a cup of coffee?" He asked expectantly.

"Umm" I began and saw his face fall. "I'm so sorry but I'm busy right now, maybe later I'll catch up with you" I said.

He looked disappointed but did a great job hiding it.

"How about I call you later?" He asked, still hopeful.

"Yeah, sure" I sighed.

I said that, not wishing to damper his spirit.

"Great" he said and waved me good bye.

"Seriously" I sighed again.

I really gave Amber the scolding of her life after she finally owned up that it was she who had given Henry my number. I was really pissed at her but I can't blame her so much. She told me how Henry kept on disturbing and pestering her for my cell phone number that she eventually had to give in.

But still, she shares in the blame because if she had told me about, I would have asked her to give him the general house number not my personal cell phone number.

I sighed again before walking away.

**********

School activities were suspended to enable us prepare adequately for the trip. When we got home, as we were packing, I called Dad to inform him of the latest development.

While we were having dinner, Ereteria came home. She was working at Mac'donalds, a renowned eatery.

"Ereteria, you look torn into a thousand places" I said, looking at her skeptically.

"That is an understatement" she said,  stifling a yawn. "I'm so tired I could sleep for two days straight"

"Come on. The job is not that bad, is it? Amber asked, proceeding to the kitchen to get some food for her.

"You are right. The job is not bad, it's just too stressing and tiring. That's all" Ereteria said.

"Don't worry. You'll grow used to it" I said, patting her back fondly. "We'll be leaving for an excursion on Thursday and won't be back until two weeks" I informed her.

"Aww, you are leaving me here all alone" she said, making a face.

"There is little to nothing we can do about it. It's compulsory for all 11th grades" Amber sighed.

"So where exactly are you guys going?" Ereteria asked.

"Melanesia, some sub-division of Oceania" Amberle answered.

"Well, Oceania got its own share in the world's Oceans, so be careful" Ereteria counselled in a kind of unusual tone.

"We will keep that in mind" I answered for Amber and myself.

When I retired to my room and checked my phone, I saw a whopping ten missed calls from Henry. That guy is crazy. Well, I had to return the call.

"Hi Henry" I replied, wishing more than ever that this conversation was not going.

Too bad, it was.

"Hi Cathy" he said from the other end. "I wanted to know your mind on what we discussed"

I totally forgot about that. He had confessed his love for me and said he hoped I would reciprocate his feelings. I nearly laughed when he said that but I just told him I would give it serious thinking.

"Ohh, that. I'm giving it serious thought and I need more time but I'm not giving you my word. So don't be disappointed if I say no" Believe me, I don't think anything was going to happen between Henry and I, so I better warn him now.

"Okay" he said in a calm tone.

"Well, is there any other thing?" I asked hoping against such.

"No, that's all. Have a good night rest" he muttered.

"You too" I said and disconnected the call.

What does he want from me? Can't he get the hint that I am pissed off by his constant pestering.

Later that night, Mom and Dad came home. Dad in his usual manner was all supportive about the whole thing but Mom was worried on how we were going to live there. She worried about the weather, the food and everything.

"Mom, remember we are sixteen and we can take care of ourselves"I said getting exasperated.

"Mom, we are not kids anymore. I bet we will back in a more healthy and perfect condition after two weeks" Amber said. Judging from the way she sounded, I could tell she was irritated.

Mom just gets herself worried over nothing. She worries a lot.

"Honey, you know very well why I am against the idea of this trip" she was trying to make my Dad see reasons with her.

"There's nothing wrong in this trip, sweetie. You're getting yourself worked up over nothing. Others have been going and coming back, will theirs be different?" Dad asked Mom.

Wait a minute. What was Dad talking about.

"But you know they need to stay in the house until Cathy knows about her..." Mom started but was interrupted by my Dad's angry voice.

"Now don't talk about that, Bella" my Dad said, visibly angry. Dad has never called Mom by her name, Anabella or Bella since long ago. So this alone was a big indicator that he was angry.

"Amber, Catherine. Go up to your rooms" my Dad said calmly. We knew better than to make him repeat himself.

We hurried up to our rooms.

I couldn't help but think about what Mom was about to say, when I got to my room.

What was I supposed to know and why did Dad get so angry about it. I couldn't understand.
