CHAPTER 1

Do you know a person? You probably do, judging by the vague description. Have you met a person, though, who's sweet yet undeniably sassy when she feels like, who's not popular but popular enough to be known by everyone? A person who likes to curl her hair with her curl iron in the morning but by the time she's at school, she wishes she'd straightened it instead? Well, you've met Sarah.

Sarah Mitchell was well......the definition of ordinary. She had a handful of friends, varying in personality and styles. Her best friend, who tended to lean into the opposite side of her, but not completely, was loud and extroverted. She was popular, and she knew it. Maya Hendricks. She was pretty; light brown skin, jet black straight hair that fell down to her waist, tilted eyes that could draw you in and full, plump lips. Sarah on the other hand, could also be defined as 'pretty', well, if everyone listened to the school counsellor during the speeches during assemblies, assuring that everyone was 'beautiful' and then you would probably find Sarah pretty.

She had beauty, one that you had to look hard for. It was there, certainly, but you'd not notice at first. She had lidded eyes, short, black hair dyed teal at the ends, she didn't have an exactly lean shape, her smile was beautiful, her dimples lighting up the whole room. Her pink-ish acne was surprisingly cute on her. But, as they say, beauty is in the eyes of its beholder.

Sarah and her friend group sat at their table in the cafeteria as usual, near the middle-where the cool kids were, and far enough from the ones at the boundaries- the weird kids. The weird kids who'd sing weird songs referencing popular TikTok trends. Yeah, that kinda weird.

Sarah couldn't deny though, the weird kids were cool in their own way, not that she'd ever admit it. Maya rambled on and on about her new crush, some popular kid, as usual. Sometimes, only sometimes, Sarah felt nervous that Maya would abandon her for the popular kids. But she'd never do that, she was her best friend.

Her best friend.

Sarah's eyes drifted across the room, landing on Aiden. The school's quarterback and the only one to win the most medals for Red Oak High. He was Mr. 'Perfect'. A heartthrob. He had auburn hair and twinkling green eyes, almost the same colour as Maya's. "Stop it- stop comparing yourself to her!"Sarah thought to herself. She couldn't compare herself to the most arguably beautiful student in Red Oak High. It would be unfair. Like everyone else, Sarah too had a crush on Aiden. She looked at the table, her face bashful as she prepared to tell the group about her crush after Maya finished rambling. But then, her ears caught on something."-Aiden's so perfect, isn't he? He's the one I'm talking about, if you didn't notice Sarah since you were day-dreaming as usual, weren't you?", she said, grinning her way. Her eyes crinkled at the corners and her button nose wrinkled up. "You were talking about ... .AIDEN!?",she replied, flabbergasted and shocked. She couldn't like Aiden anymore, that's against girl code! Or......Maya would never know if she never told anyone, right? 'Alright Maya, you can have him', she thought.
