A CHANGE OF HEART
EMERSON FOUND THAT SHE WAS SPENDING MOST OF HER TIME AT THE LOFT NOWADAYS.
The Prescott woman was taking on more hours down at the station which left Emerson to her own devices. She'd been avoiding Elizabeth for the last two weeks under the guise of bronchitis, so there was really no one else to see other than Derek and Isaac.
Peter didn't make many appearances, something about having his own place downtown, and it was usually the two blonds hanging out. Derek was always off brooding elsewhere in the loft, the threat of the alpha pack always on his mind as much as it was on hers, but at least Emerson could smile through the panic when need be.
Derek didn't smile much, like, at all, she learned.
Though, on rare occasions, Derek would be the only one home when she stopped by. Isaac had taking a liking to Scott McCall ever since the smackdown against Gerard, and Emerson was sure that they'd be best friends by the end of the summer.
That afternoon in particular was one such an occasion, Emerson letting herself in while she hummed a gentle tune. The sound caught the man's attention right away, his head raising in her direction.
There was a... was that fondness in his eye roll? She stopped humming, not particularly wanting to analyze the small, albeit confusing emotion further.
"Hey Dere," she said haphazardly, before she realized her mistake. "–ek. Hey Derek."
She was getting too comfortable. She had a job to do here— surely that was it.
Putting her bag down on the new couch he'd bought within the last week, her attention was zeroed in on the small succulent that was sat on the coffee table adjacent from it.
"Isaac's not here, Em."
Okay, so he had heard the slip up. It was her turn to roll her eyes, not used to hearing the nickname come from him. "I know; he sent me a picture of him at the McCall's place a few hours ago."
Whatever Derek was doing at his desk stopped, his hand stilling with a pen in it. "Then... why are you here?" he questioned, leaning forward in his desk chair when she approached with two pieces of paper in her hand. "Aren't we meeting tomorrow to do some research?"
"Yeah, which is why I came today about these," she emphasized, sliding the papers onto his desk. He didn't give her any sort of reaction as he looked at them, at the faces that stared up at him, and that was all the proof she needed to badger him about it. "When were you going to tell me that Erica and Boyd went missing?"
The only reason why she found out was because while dropping off Hannah's lunch at the station, she'd seen the missing posters plastered on the corkboard near the front desk. She asked for copies, knowing damn well she needed to see Derek.
She was less than thrilled at his automatic response. "I wasn't going to."
Emerson's jaw clicked. "Isaac said they were going off to join another pack."
"I'm sure they tried to."
"That was weeks ago, Derek!"
"I know that," he snapped in response, the pressure over the situation no doubt building inside of him. "I'm dealing with it, alright?"
