Chapter 1: A Different Kind of Death

Authors Note:
Before we begin, I would like to make something clear. In this story, Momonga's humanity has already been lost, meaning he is an evil Overlord. And since he is not limited by his humanity, he is able to use his power with more control and creativity.

Standing in the air with a golden staff adorned with exquisite inscriptions and seven crowning snakes, Death stood with utter indifference.

Down below, Death watched as bodies were being harvested, with their gut wrenching screams being muffled by the rapid torrents of snow.

Death had been watching from the beginning, even before things evolve to this stage but whether these mortals died or not, did not cause a ripple in his mind.

Flying to the ground, Death walked to the corpses on the ground, with his staff echoing throughout the stillness of the place.

It's kind of hard to imagine that this place was filled with joy and life just a few hours ago. They were going through there regular routine when a man appeared and slaughtered them.

Death didn't feel any threat from him and just observed at the time, but it seemed he was attempting to give his blood to these people. But they all died as a result.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

As he walked, Death turned his head towards the faint presence of life he sensed and approached.

Looking down, Death saw a woman concealing the body of two children, however her struggle was pointless, they would die all the same.

Just as he predicted, the presence of life was snuffed out. Looking at the mortals before him, Death sensed a faint calling within him. Examining the feeling, he concluded he must save them?

However, why should he save these mortals?Death was a mercy that was granted to them, even if not done by him. They were closer to him in death than life.

Death's eyes looked at the three mortals and pondered. His senses were telling him to save them but he didn't see a reason to. What is so special about these three?

Pointing his staff at the youngest of the mortal, the child's chest rose and fall returnedand began to cry.

Death stood there and did not bring the others to life. His sense told him to resurrect these mortals but not the reason. He did not doubt his senses but his senses never disobeyed like today, so he was hesistant

Watching the child hold its family in its arms and cry with all its mind, Death turned around and was about to leave when he left something pulling his robes.

"Father, please don't go." The child cried, with blood on its trembling hands.

Looking at the child, Death spoke with indifference, "I am the Ruler of Death, Momonga. I am not this father you speak of."

"Yo..u brought me back. My family is dead, I died with them, but you brought me back, doesn't that make you my new parent?"

Interesting, a mortal upon death should have lost all memories of prior to that event, but this one remembered? What is so special about her?

"It's true I brought you back, but that does not make me your father. I can make you dead again." Momonga raised his free hand and a heart appeared in it but before he crushed it, the child knelt down and started sobbing as if understanding what would happen, "Father, please don't. I have to get revenge for my family!"

Revenge? Family? My mother was my only family, but I was unable to reach the status needed to protect her. Hmm but this child have the courage to do what I couldn't?

"I wish you luck on your journey." Momonga's cold voice did not change and he flew into the skies. Frowning inwardly, he looked down at the child gripping his robes, with closed eyes.

Momonga could see her knuckle turning white, meaning she was losing strength but he did not stop flying. He gave her an option earlier, if she wants to die a painful death, so be it.

Flying for a while, Momonga stopped above a forest covered in snow and spotted three people fighting. He was able to see their levels were around 10-20. However, that did not interest him, it was the dialogue.

The swordsman called the female child a demon, but when Momonga used Appraisal it said otherwise.

I am a foreigner in this world, and as a foreigner I lack information. This child said her family was slaughtered by demons but they look nothing like the demons I know. Also, this world clearly has a power system of its own, it would be wise to learn of it. I do not believe this world is a threat to me, but being cautious won't hurt.

Glancing at the child, from his brief interaction, this child lacked information that might be helpful. Of course, he could just capture those two below and get that information but there is a risk I cannot ascertain until I learn more of this world.

There is a better alternative.

Momonga teleported to the village and looked for the child's mother, finding her where he left her.

Pointing his staff at her, her chest rose and fell. Her injuries all disappeared.

This is very interesting. The child and this woman are both below level 2, so why were they able to resurrect? Should they not combust into ashes?

Seeing Momonga, the woman trembled and knelt down, "Lord Shinigami, thank you."

"I did not resurrect you to hear you empty words, I wish to know everything about this world."

The child woke up and ran over to her mother, crying with happiness. Her eyes gleamed with hope and approached Momonga.

"Father, can I ask you to bring the others back?"

"It seems I have been too kind." Momonga used telekinesis to bring the mother before him and placed his hand on her head, looking for the information he needed.

Since he was looking for specific information, Momonga's mana did not lower drastically but at a moderate rate.

"Demons? Sun Breathing? Hashiras'? The demons here are strikingly similar to vampires. Sun Breathing or maybe breathing in general is the power system of this world. That mortal earlier didn't use Sun Breathing described by this woman's memory. Finally Hashira, the strongest being amongst humans who fight against demons."

Tossing the woman aside, Momonga pondered what his next course of action should be. Whether it be demons or Hashira, he could kill them easily but that was not his goal or did he have one?

As the Ruler of Death, perhaps spreading death would be a goal but seem pointless.

Looking at the child helping her mother, Momonga muttered, "This child caused something within me to resurrect her. It would be wise to observe her and figure out why. Also, I am curious about these demons."
