Lana and Matt have their first kid- a son named Leo. It's his 2nd birthday today.
Lana stretched her arms above her head, her fingers grazing the soft morning light that filtered through the bedroom curtains. The gentle hum of the air conditioner was the only sound competing with the occasional chirp of birds outside. She glanced at the clock—6:45 AM. Time to start the day.
She slipped out of bed quietly, careful not to wake Matt. He lay sprawled on his back, a peaceful smile tugging at the corners of his lips. Lana couldn't help but smile as she thought about how lucky she was. Matt had always been supportive, and his easy-going nature had made their life together a joy.
Downstairs, Lana tiptoed into the kitchen. The scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the room, and she poured herself a steaming cup before turning her attention to the calendar on the wall. Today marked Leo's second birthday—a milestone she could hardly believe they had reached so quickly. Lana had planned a small family gathering, just the three of them and Matt's parents. It would be simple, but she wanted it to be special.
The house was still quiet except for the occasional clattering of dishes as Lana prepared breakfast. The house's warmth and the sound of her humming mixed into a melody of comfort and contentment. She set the breakfast table, making sure to arrange everything just right.
At 7:15, she heard the familiar patter of little feet approaching. Leo emerged from his room, his hair tousled and his favorite blue blanket clutched tightly in one hand. His eyes, still half-closed from sleep, brightened when he saw her.
"Morning, Mama!" he chirped, rubbing his eyes.
"Good morning, sweetheart," Lana replied, lifting him up and planting a kiss on his cheek. "Are you ready for your special day?"
Leo nodded enthusiastically, his small face beaming with excitement. He wasn't entirely sure what a birthday was yet, but he loved the idea of having special attention.
As they ate breakfast, Matt finally appeared, stretching and yawning. He flashed a sleepy but affectionate smile at his family.
"Morning, everyone. What's on the agenda for today?" he asked, his voice still thick with sleep.
"Just the usual birthday stuff," Lana said, handing him a cup of coffee. "The cake's ready, and I've got the decorations all set up. We're having a small party with your parents this afternoon."
Matt's eyes lit up as he took in the scene. "Sounds perfect. Leo's going to have an amazing day."
After breakfast, Lana busied herself with final preparations while Matt played with Leo in the living room. She was putting the final touches on the cake when Matt's phone buzzed with a message. He glanced at it briefly before setting it aside.
Lana noticed the distraction. "Everything okay?"
Matt nodded. "Yeah, just work stuff. Nothing urgent."
An hour later, as they finished setting up for the party, Matt's phone buzzed again. This time, he glanced at it with a furrowed brow.
"Everything alright?" Lana asked, noting his concern.
Matt hesitated before replying, "It's just... something from work. I'll handle it later."
The doorbell rang, interrupting their conversation. Matt's parents arrived, bringing with them a bag of presents and a bouquet of flowers for Lana. The house filled with laughter and chatter as the small party began.
The day passed in a flurry of laughter, cake, and presents. Leo was overjoyed with his new toys and the attention from his grandparents. The birthday celebrations seemed to erase any lingering worry Matt had.
As the party wound down, Matt and Lana found themselves alone in the kitchen, cleaning up the remnants of cake and wrapping paper. Matt glanced at Lana, a look of contemplation on his face.
"Everything's been great today," he said slowly. "But I have to tell you something."
Lana looked up from wiping the counter. "What's up?"
Matt took a deep breath. "I got an unexpected message from work. They've found something... something that might change a lot of things."
Lana's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?"
Matt ran a hand through his hair. "It's a big opportunity, but it's also a huge change. I need to decide if we should pursue it."
Lana's mind raced. She had grown used to their current life, their routine. The thought of a significant change unsettled her. But she also knew that Matt's ambitions were part of who he was.
"What kind of opportunity?" she asked carefully.
Matt looked into her eyes, his expression earnest. "It's a chance to move into a bigger role with more responsibility. It could mean relocating, and it would definitely mean more time away from home. But it's a great opportunity."
Lana nodded slowly. "We should think it through together. Whatever it is, we'll figure it out."
As they stood together in the quiet kitchen, the soft glow of the evening sun casting long shadows on the floor, they both knew that the days ahead would bring new challenges. But in that moment, surrounded by the love of their family and the warmth of their home, they felt ready to face whatever came next—together.
