The crisp autumn days gave way to cooler, darker evenings, signaling that winter was on its way. Mingyu’s routine with Wonwoo continued to bring him comfort, and the bond between them grew stronger. However, as the seasons changed, so did the reminders of his past.

One chilly afternoon, as Mingyu and Wonwoo were preparing for a quiet evening, his doorbell rang. When he answered the door, he was greeted by an unexpected visitor—an old friend of Seokmin’s named Jae-Hwa. Jae-Hwa had been close with Seokmin during their university days and had recently returned to the area.

"Mingyu," Jae-Hwa said, his voice tinged with nostalgia and sadness. "I hope I’m not intruding. I heard about Seokmin, and I wanted to come by and offer my condolences in person."

Mingyu was momentarily taken aback. He hadn’t seen Jae-Hwa in years, and the sight of him stirred a rush of emotions. He invited him inside, and they settled in the living room, surrounded by the comforting familiarity of Mingyu’s home.

As they talked, Jae-Hwa shared fond memories of Seokmin—stories from their university days, anecdotes about Seokmin’s infectious enthusiasm, and the impact he had on those around him. Mingyu listened, his heart both warmed and pained by the reminiscences. It was clear that Jae-Hwa had been deeply affected by Seokmin’s passing, just as Mingyu had.

"I still can’t believe he’s gone," Jae-Hwa said, his voice faltering. "He was such a bright light in everyone’s life. I remember how happy he was when he talked about you. You two were inseparable."

Mingyu nodded, a lump forming in his throat. "We were. Losing him has been the hardest thing I’ve ever faced."

Jae-Hwa’s eyes were filled with empathy. "I’m so sorry, Mingyu. I wish I had reached out sooner. I wanted to be here for you, but life got in the way."

The conversation took Mingyu back to the pain he had felt in the immediate aftermath of Seokmin’s death. The sorrow, the isolation, and the overwhelming sense of loss came flooding back, and he found it difficult to hold back his tears.

"I’ve been trying to move forward," Mingyu admitted, his voice breaking. "It’s been so hard. Sometimes I feel like I’m just going through the motions."

Jae-Hwa’s expression shifted slightly, a hint of something sharper in his tone. "I guess it’s easy to see why you might struggle to move on. After all, Seokmin always had a way of making everyone around him feel like they were the center of his world. I can’t imagine how it must feel to be overshadowed like that."

Mingyu’s heart sank at Jae-Hwa’s comment. He looked up, hurt and confused. "What do you mean by that?"

Jae-Hwa’s gaze was a mixture of pity and judgment. "It’s just that sometimes it seems like you’re holding onto Seokmin’s memory like a crutch. I mean, it’s been five years. Don’t you think it’s time to let go?"

Mingyu’s eyes filled with tears, and he struggled to maintain his composure. "You don’t understand how hard it’s been. I loved him more than you know."

Wonwoo, who had been quietly observing, felt a surge of protectiveness for Mingyu. His voice was firm but calm as he spoke. "Jae-Hwa, that’s not fair. Mingyu has been through a tremendous loss. Everyone grieves in their own way, and it’s not for anyone to judge how long it takes."

Jae-Hwa’s expression hardened, and he shot a glance at Wonwoo. "I didn’t mean to offend, but it’s difficult to see someone stuck in the past when there’s a whole world out there."

Wonwoo stood up, his demeanor resolute. "If you can’t offer support and understanding, then perhaps it’s best for you to leave."

Jae-Hwa’s eyes widened in surprise at Wonwoo’s abruptness. "Fine. If that’s how you feel, I’ll leave."

He stood abruptly and headed toward the door, his departure abrupt and filled with tension. Mingyu watched him go, feeling a mixture of relief and sadness. The encounter had been painful, but Wonwoo’s defense had helped to restore some of his emotional equilibrium.

Once Jae-Hwa had left, Wonwoo turned to Mingyu, his expression softening. "I’m sorry about that. You didn’t deserve to be treated that way."

Mingyu shook his head, wiping away his tears. "Thank you for standing up for me. I just didn’t expect the visit to turn out like this."

Wonwoo sat down beside Mingyu, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You’re stronger than you realize, Mingyu. It’s okay to have moments of vulnerability, and you don’t have to justify your grief to anyone. I’m here for you, and I believe in your strength."

Mingyu took a deep breath, feeling a sense of gratitude and relief. "I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, Wonwoo. I really do."

As they sat together in the quiet of the living room, Mingyu felt a renewed sense of support and understanding. The shadows of the past had momentarily cast their darkness, but with Wonwoo’s unwavering presence, Mingyu was reminded of the strength he had found in their connection. Despite the pain, he knew that with Wonwoo by his side, he could continue to navigate his journey of healing and rediscovery.
