Chapter Seven: Date Night Gone Awry
The sun was beginning to set over Forks, casting a golden hue over the town as Stevie and Paul prepared for their first real date. Stevie had chosen a local restaurant for their evening out, wanting to keep things relaxed and simple. The restaurant had a cozy charm, with well loved wood floors and big vinyl booths, and it was the perfect place for them to get to know each other better.
Paul arrived looking sharp in a dark button-up shirt and jeans, his hair styled neatly for once. Stevie felt her heart flutter as he walked in, his confident stride and warm smile immediately putting her at ease.
"Hey, you look great," Paul said, sliding into the booth across from her. He reached across the table, taking her hand in his."Thanks," Stevie replied, her cheeks flushing slightly.
"So do you. I'm glad we could finally have this date."They both ended up ordering the same thing, alfredo noodles and a side salad, Paul ordered chicken while Stevie ordered the shrimp, laughing and chatting about their favorite movies, music, and the little quirks of living in a small town.
Everything felt effortless, the conversation flowing naturally between them. Paul's laughter was infectious, and Stevie found herself completely at ease, enjoying the moment without any of the usual worries weighing on her.As they finished their meal, Paul suggested they take a walk around the park nearby, a picturesque setting with blooming flowers and a small lake reflecting the colors of the setting sun.
Stevie agreed, excited to continue their evening together. They strolled hand in hand, the air filled with the scent of fresh grass and blooming roses. Paul seemed to be in his element, his easygoing nature making Stevie feel like she was floating on a cloud.
The night was perfect, the kind of evening you wished could last forever. But as they turned a corner near the edge of the park, Stevie noticed a familiar face in the distance.
A tall man with long black hair, russet skin, and a smug expression was approaching them, and Paul's demeanor changed instantly. He stiffened, his hand slipping from Stevie's grasp.
"Hey, Paul! Long time no see," the man called out with a tone of casual disdain.Paul's smile faltered as he recognized him. "Hey, Mark. What are you doing here?"
Mark was a year older than Paul, and lived in La Push and went to school with Paul on the reservation.Mark's gaze flicked over to Stevie, a smirk spreading across his face. "Well, well, well. I see you've got yourself a new flavor of the week."
Stevie's heart sank at the insinuation in Mark's voice. She glanced at Paul, noticing the tightness in his jaw and the anger brewing in his eyes.
Paul took a deep breath, trying to keep his cool. "Mark, just drop it."Mark laughed dismissively. "Oh, come on. Don't tell me you're falling for this one. She looks like she needs a real man, not some... temporary fling."
The words were like a punch to the gut. Stevie felt her cheeks burn with anger, but before she could react, Paul's temper snapped. He stepped towards Mark, his fists clenched at his sides.
"Back off," Paul growled, his voice low and dangerous.Mark's smirk widened, seemingly unfazed.
"Or what? You going to call your little gang to come fight your battles for you?"
Stevie could see the fury in Paul's eyes, the tension in his shoulders as he tried to restrain himself. The situation was escalating quickly, and she knew she had to intervene."Paul, don't," she said, stepping between them.
"Let's just walk away."But Paul was beyond listening. His anger was palpable, and before Stevie could react, he had pushed Mark against a nearby tree. The confrontation was chaotic, Mark taunting Paul with more inappropriate comments, his words only fueling Paul's rage.
As he let his fists fly, Stevie barely managed to pull Paul back, her hands gripping his arms as she tried to calm him down. "Paul, stop! He's not worth it!"Paul was shaking, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked as if he might lose control, his muscles tensing as he fought to keep himself together.
Finally, with a final, furious shove, he turned and bolted towards the woods at the edge of the park."Paul, wait!" Stevie called after him, but he was already disappearing into the darkness.
Stevie stood there, her heart pounding, her hands still trembling from the adrenaline. She watched as Paul ran into the forest, the trees swallowing him up. Just as she was about to follow him, she heard a strange sound coming from the direction Paul had gone. It was a low, guttural growl, the kind of sound that sent chills down her spine. Without thinking, she pushed through the underbrush, her footsteps hurried but cautious.
As she reached a small clearing, she saw a flash of movement—Paul, or rather something that looked like Paul, but larger, more powerful. His form was shifting, his body elongating and changing shape before her eyes.
Stevie's breath caught in her throat as she witnessed the transformation. The creature in front of her was unmistakably a wolf, its fur a deep, grey color. It was Paul, she was sure of it, but the sight was beyond anything she had ever imagined. She stumbled back, her mind reeling from what she had just seen. "What the hell was that... I must really be losing it," she whispered to herself, her voice trembling with a mix of disbelief and fear.
Stevie turned and made her way back to the park, Mark long gone, her heart heavy with confusion and the weight of the night's events. She knew she had just stumbled upon something far greater than she had anticipated, and as she walked back to her car, she couldn't shake the feeling that the world she thought she understood had just shifted beneath her feet.
