I tried to sleep after Norman told me to, but my mind was still flashing with fire and blood and screaming and- well that kind of thing. Eventually I just gave up and leaned against the wall of the cave-thingy we were staying in. Norman was asleep beside me, his hair fallen over his eyes . . . I watched him breathe for a bit. I just had to reassure myself that he was alive. Even if no one else I ever knew was, Norman was the most important. If he was still alive then I could be too.
I was actually almost asleep when I heard a sound, like footsteps. But there was something wrong about them, huge and more than two feet. Not human. shit.
"Norman?" I whisper-shouted, poking his head.
He started awake, his face panicked, "What? What's going on?"
"Do you hear that? Do you know what it is?"
He paused and tilted his head, listening, then muttered, "I don't kn-"
Then we heard a growl, extremely loud and right near our tree cave. We made eye contact for a second, and then both bolted out into the open. We made it approximately ten feet before the ground caved in unded Norman and he fell through the ground. Without a second thought I grabbed his hand. I did not quite calculate within my mind that rather than, as I pictured, pulling him back up to the surface, he would drag me in with him.
