The palace was steeped in an uneasy quiet, the kind that settled after a storm had passed but before the damage could be fully assessed.
Servants moved with hushed footsteps, and the usually lively court was subdued, the nobles casting wary glances at one another.
The news of Cecilia's poisoning had spread through the kingdom like wildfire, igniting fear and suspicion.
In her chamber, Cecilia remained in her unnatural slumber, her face pale against the silken sheets.
The palace physicians had done all they could, using every known remedy, but nothing seemed to rouse her.
For days, she had been locked in that twilight state, neither truly asleep nor awake, a fragile life hanging by a thread.
Leo was a constant presence at her side, his regal composure shattered.
He had not left her room since the incident, his duties forgotten, his world narrowed to the space of her bedchamber.
The fierce prince who had commanded armies and navigated the treacherous waters of politics was now a man brought low by helplessness and fear.
It was the early hours of the morning, the time when the world was at its stillest, that Cecilia stirred.
It was just the faintest movement-
a flutter of her eyelids, a twitch of her fingers-
but to Leo, it was everything.
He sat up, his breath catching in his throat, as he watched her slowly awaken.
Cecilia's eyes opened, dazed and unfocused at first, as if she were emerging from a long, dark tunnel.
She blinked, her vision adjusting to the soft glow of the lanterns.
When her gaze finally settled on Leo, she saw the worry etched deep into his features, the relief that softened his hardened exterior.
"Leo...?" Her voice was weak, barely more than a whisper.
"I'm here," he replied, his voice thick with emotion.
He took her hand, holding it gently, as if afraid she might slip away again.
"You're safe, Cecilia. You're going to be okay."
She tried to sit up, but her body was still too weak, and she sank back into the pillows.
"What... what happened?"
"You were poisoned," Leo said, his expression darkening at the memory.
"But you're safe now. You're going to be alright."
Cecilia nodded slightly, though her mind was still hazy.
She could see the exhaustion in Leo's eyes, the toll that the past days had taken on him. "And you... have you been here the whole time?"
Leo nodded, unable to speak for a moment.
He had never imagined he would be so consumed by fear, that he would be so desperate to save her.
"I couldn't leave you. I wouldn't leave you."
As Cecilia regained her strength, the palace slowly returned to its usual rhythm, though the undercurrent of unease remained.
The attempted poisoning had shaken everyone, from the lowliest servant to the highest noble, and the search for the culprit had been relentless.
Leo, however, was no closer to discovering the true mastermind behind the attack.
