"So you want me to pretend to be your boyfriend for your parents?" the stranger asked.
James nodded as he looked out the café window, watching the rain fall.
"That's a shame," the stranger said with a smirk, crossing his arms and resting his foot on his other knee. "I thought you might want me as your real boyfriend."
James raised an eyebrow. "Why would I think that?"
"Well," the stranger said with a grin, "I'm pretty handsome and charming, if I do say so myself."
James sighed in frustration. "So, are you going to help or not? If not, I hope we don't run into each other again."
He stood up, ready to leave and escape the awkward situation.
"I'm afraid we'll be seeing a lot more of each other," the stranger said with a smirk. "I'll help you out, so get used to it."
James sat back down, clearly annoyed. "Who said we'd be seeing each other often?"
The stranger crossed his arms. "Well, if I'm playing your boyfriend, we'll be around each other."
James sighed. "You're only helping for one day. That's it."
"One day?" the stranger said, taking a sip of his coffee. "How will your parents believe it with just one day?"
James snapped, "That's my problem. I'll deal with it once the marriage is off."
The stranger set his cup down. "Fine, but what about my reward?"
James frowned. "Reward? You're helping because I won the game. Why should you get anything extra?"
James slammed his hand on the table, frustration evident in his voice.
"I expected some kind of reward for this. I'm not even a trained actor, and yet I'm still putting in the effort." The stranger shrugged nonchalantly. "I figured as much. A little extra compensation wouldn't hurt, especially for my acting skills."
James sighed deeply, feeling the weight of his predicament. He was just eager to wrap this up and return to his normal life. It was clear he'd chosen the wrong person to help him.
"Fine. But the reward will depend on how convincing you are."
"Deal," the stranger said, his smile widening.
"Deal," James echoed, waiting patiently as the stranger finished his coffee.
"Ready to go?" James asked as he stood up.
"Go? Where?" the stranger asked, his eyes widening slightly as he took his last sip of coffee.
"To my place," James replied, signaling the end of their café meeting and the start of their new arrangement.
"Your place? Right now?" the stranger asked, his eyes widening in surprise. "You mentioned the deal is just for a day, right? Even if it's only for a day, I should at least have some time to prepare—things like a formal introduction. You wouldn't want your parents to think you're dating someone unprepared—"
"Alright, alright, I get it," James interrupted, cutting him off. "Tomorrow evening works. Just make sure you're ready and don't mess up."
"Understood. I wouldn't want to miss out on my reward," the stranger said with a determined nod.
"Good," James replied, relieved to have some clarity.
The stranger then looked puzzled. "Oh, right. I don't even know your address. How am I supposed to find your place?"
