Jimin stared at the ocean, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. It had been days since he'd met Jungkook again, and despite their slow reconnection, something about it all felt surreal. The beach, the waves, the warmth of the sun-all of it felt like it belonged to another time, another version of himself. Yet, here he was, standing beside the boy-no, the man-who had been such a crucial part of his childhood.
Jungkook stood a few steps away, camera in hand, capturing the sunset as if it were the only thing that mattered. But Jimin knew better. He could feel Jungkook's eyes on him between shots, the weight of unspoken words lingering in the air.
"Still obsessed with photography, I see," Jimin commented, his voice carrying a hint of teasing.
Jungkook lowered the camera, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Some things never change."
Jimin turned to face him, the soft breeze tousling his hair. "And some things do."
Jungkook's smile faltered slightly, and for a moment, they both stood in the quiet, the sound of the waves filling the space between them. Jimin could feel the weight of Jungkook's gaze on him, as if he were trying to read every thought, every emotion that crossed his mind.
"Do you ever think about the past?" Jungkook's voice was soft, almost hesitant.
Jimin hesitated, unsure of how to answer. Did he think about the past? Of course, he did. How could he not? But the past was a tricky thing, full of memories that were both sweet and painful, tangled up in a web of feelings he wasn't sure he could unravel.
"Sometimes," Jimin admitted, his eyes drifting back to the horizon. "But I try not to dwell on it too much. What's the point? It's already happened. We can't change it."
Jungkook nodded slowly, his gaze still fixed on Jimin. "Yeah... but sometimes, it feels like the past never really leaves us. Like it's still shaping who we are, even now."
Jimin turned to face him fully, his brow furrowing in thought. "Is that why you've been watching me? Following me?"
Jungkook's eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, he looked like a deer caught in headlights. But then he sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I... I didn't mean to make it weird, Jimin. I just... I didn't know how to approach you. After all these years, I was afraid you wouldn't want to see me again. So, I just... watched from a distance."
Jimin's heart clenched at Jungkook's words. There was something so vulnerable about the way he said it, as if he were laying his soul bare. And yet, there was a part of him that couldn't shake the unease that came with the idea of being watched so closely without knowing it.
"Why didn't you just come up to me?" Jimin asked softly, his voice laced with curiosity rather than accusation.
Jungkook looked down at the sand, kicking at a small shell. "I didn't know if you'd remember me. Or if you even wanted to remember. Our childhood wasn't exactly... simple."
Jimin smiled faintly, memories of their playful bickering and constant competitions flooding back. "No, it wasn't. But that's what made it... us."
Jungkook looked up, meeting Jimin's gaze with an intensity that made his heart skip a beat. "I never forgot you, Jimin. Not for a single day. I've been searching for you ever since you left."
Jimin felt a rush of emotions he couldn't quite name. The idea that Jungkook had been looking for him all this time-it was overwhelming, to say the least. And yet, there was a warmth in his chest, a sense of belonging that he hadn't felt in years.
"Why?" Jimin asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Why didn't you just... move on?"
Jungkook took a step closer, closing the distance between them. "Because I couldn't. Because you were always there, in the back of my mind, like a piece of me that was missing. I tried to move on, to forget, but nothing ever filled that space. It was always you, Jimin."
Jimin's breath hitched, his heart pounding in his chest. He hadn't expected this-this raw honesty, this confession that left him feeling both exposed and understood. For years, he had buried his feelings, convinced that whatever he had felt for Jungkook as a child was nothing more than a fleeting crush. But now, standing here with Jungkook, hearing his words-it all came rushing back.
"I don't know what to say," Jimin admitted, his voice trembling slightly. "This is... a lot."
Jungkook nodded, his expression softening. "I know. And I don't expect you to have all the answers right now. I just... I needed you to know. I needed you to understand why I've been acting the way I have."
Jimin took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing thoughts. "I appreciate that, Jungkook. Really, I do. But this... whatever this is between us... we need to figure it out. Together."
Jungkook smiled, a genuine, relieved smile that lit up his entire face. "Yeah. Together."
They stood in silence for a moment, the waves crashing gently against the shore, the sun dipping lower in the sky. And for the first time in a long time, Jimin felt a sense of peace. The past was still there, lingering at the edges of his mind, but it didn't feel so heavy anymore. Not with Jungkook standing beside him, ready to face whatever came next.
And maybe, just maybe, they could finally find a way forward-together.
