Haruka and I were good friends.
I first met her in middle school, when she stood up for me. I would always be too scared to defend myself, casting me as an outcast. Students would pick on and bully me, no matter what I did. The day we first met, a group of students shoved me against a locker and stole a book I needed for an assignment. They were taller than me, and held it up above me so I couldn't reach it. I felt like bursting into tears right there, as everyone in the hallway watched my pathetic attempts to get my book back. And that's when Haruka came. She got the book from their hands and began to defend me, standing in front and retaliating against them.
We were friends ever since.
She started to talk, eat lunch, and walk home with me. I was seen as an outcast, so having someone to talk to for once was nice. We had similar hair and eye colours, same interests, even same classes. As we neared the end of middle school, though, her grades dropped. We were both top of the class at first, but now I'm the only one with that ranking.
The week after final exams, I confronted her. The dropping grades, isolation, and refusal to tell me anything made me feel nervous, though she wouldn't budge on her words. No matter how much I tried to tell her it was okay, she left me in the dark. I was just about to leave, but then she said something I'll never forget.
"See you never, I guess."
She went missing the following week.
