Beth POV:The soft rise and fall of Bailey's chest against mine was the sweetest lullaby. After what felt like an eternity of bouncing, rocking, and shushing, she was finally asleep. It was a victory hard-won. We had been trying to get her to sleep for hours before we even left for the airport, a combination of jet lag and excitement for our holiday making her a cranky, overtired toddler.
Viv, my girlfriend, and Leah, my best mate, were both equally as relieved as I was. We'd been a team for the past few hours, swapping shifts as Bailey's sleep-induced cries threatened to derail our meticulously planned trip. But she was finally out, snuggled against me like a little sleepy koala. Just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, she jolted awake.
"Mummy!" she shrieked, her voice piercing the air.
The serenity of the moment evaporated, replaced by the familiar panic that comes with a child's meltdown in a public space. Viv, ever the calming presence, whisked Bailey from my arms and retreated to the other side of the seating area. She began rocking her gently, her soothing murmur a balm against Bailey's escalating tantrum.
Ten minutes later, Bailey was back asleep, nestled against Viv's chest. I couldn't help but feel a surge of admiration for my girlfriend. She had this uncanny ability to soothe Bailey like no one else.
The boarding announcement came as a welcome distraction. We all shuffled onto the plane, finding our seats. As we settled in, I couldn't wait to share the news that had been bubbling inside me for weeks.
The flight was uneventful, the hours flying by as Bailey slept soundly next to Viv. As we landed, the airport was a blur, the swiftness of the arrival a welcome contrast to the chaos of the departure. The ride to the hotel was equally smooth, Bailey remaining asleep the entire time.
The next morning, we woke to the gentle murmur of the waves crashing against the shore. The sound was a soothing soundtrack to our tropical paradise. After a delicious breakfast at the hotel's buffet, we spent the morning exploring the resort. Bailey, finally fully rested, was in her element, splashing in the pool with a joyous abandon that made my heart swell.
But the day took an unexpected turn. After an hour in the pool, it was time for Bailey's nap. She wasn't happy about it, throwing a tantrum that rivaled her airport meltdown. Viv and Leah were in the living room while I was in the bedroom trying to get Bailey to sleep. But she resisted, her cries echoing through the room. After an hour of gentle rocking and soothing whispers, she finally drifted off to sleep. Relief, tinged with exhaustion, washed over me.
As Bailey's soft breathing filled the room, I crept out to the living room where Viv and Leah sat, their conversation hushed. I sat down, a mischievous grin playing on my lips.
"Looks like the family is going to be bigger this Christmas," I announced, catching Viv and Leah's attention. Leah, who had been in on the secret since the beginning, tilted her head with a knowing smile. Viv, however, was utterly confused.
"Babe, shut the fuck up. You're not pregnant," she said, her voice laced with disbelief.
I reached for her hand, my heart pounding with excitement. "You really think I'd lie to you about something this big? Look."
I gently placed my hand on her stomach, tracing the curve of my growing belly. A gasp escaped Viv's lips as she realized what I was showing her. Tears welled up in her eyes, tears of pure joy. She had always dreamed of having another child. She loved Bailey more than words could express, but I think she secretly hoped that this time, it would be a boy.
"Oh my god," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You're pregnant. We're having a baby! I can't believe it."
"By December 19th, we'll have another baby in our arms," I said, a smile splitting my face. "Our gender reveal is tonight. Bailey is going to be a big sister."
The news was met with squeals of delight from Leah. We spent the rest of the afternoon planning the gender reveal, a mix of excitement and anticipation filling the air.
Later that evening, we gathered on the balcony, Bailey bouncing with excitement. She couldn't wait to find out if she was going to have a baby brother or sister, especially right before Christmas.
Viv and I were filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude. This was our first baby together, a culmination of our love and a testament to the beautiful journey we had embarked on. Even though Bailey was my daughter from a previous relationship, Viv had always been the mother figure in her life. They shared a bond that was unbreakable.
We decided to make it a family affair, including Leah in the big reveal. We all dressed for the occasion, Leah in a pink suit, me in pink, and Viv sporting a blue suit. Bailey, in her Manchester City home shirt, added a touch of blue to the mix.
We set up a video for our social media page, capturing the excitement and anticipation of the moment. We counted down from five, and with a simultaneous pop, Viv and I popped the balloons, revealing a cascade of blue confetti.
We were having a baby boy.
As the blue confetti rained down, laughter and cheers filled the air. It was a moment we would cherish forever, a testament to our love and a promise of a family growing even stronger.
