MAEVIS walked into class and sees that there's a new seating chart on the board. she looks around on the screen and spots her name. it was a pair of desks in the corner, and the person she was sitting with, was of course, hawk.
her heart dropped to the floor as she struggled to move her feet to the corner where her seat is. she put her stuff down and sat in her seat.
she waited a few minutes, hawk stumbled in a few seconds before the bell went off. hawk looked around confused and then looked at the board. his body language immediately changed. his posture slumped as he turned around and looked over to maevis in her seat, she was avoiding eye contact with him as she pretended to be busy on her phone.
he slowly walked over there, not picking up his feet at all. he looked like a child throwing a tantrum, and he practically was. she looked up from her phone to hawk as he sat down. putting his bag onto the floor. he mumbled a string of curses as he settled into his seat. maevis rolled her eyes at his mumbles, "have something to say?"
"no. i don't." he groaned, barely turning his head to look at her.
"alright class!" the teacher spoke up, sitting up from his chair, "new seating chart! how we feeling?" he tried his best to sound enthusiastic for the class, even thought he knew a majority of the room groaned in annoyance as he talked.
hawk raised his hand and the teacher pointed at him. "when do we get new seats?" he put his hand back onto his lap. the teacher sighed and shook his head, "not important! anyway!" he then started talking about what they were gonna do in class that day, but this class was so bad so he had given up and just let the class do whatever.
maevis wasn't listening though. her brain drifted off. her eyes wandered around the room, and she was bouncing her right leg. she was mostly thinking about her dream, the way hawk looked at her when he above her, even if it was fake, it was nice to see him not hate her for once. and treated her sort of like a human being.
her eyes wandered to his hands resting on his lap. his veins that trailed all the way from his arm, down to his hand. there were too many count. she tried her best to look away but his hands were like magnets to her eyes, she couldn't help but stare. she also wasn't listening to the teacher at all. so when he said discuss with the person your sitting with... she stayed silent as she stared.
he turned to her slightly, not bothering to really make eye contact, but caught her staring. he looked down at where he eyes were looking, his hands that laid on top of eachother as they rested on his lap. he scoffed and moved his hands on either side of his chair. "hello!" he yelled. which earned a shush from the teacher.
she jumped in her seat and then looked up at his face. he had a scowl as he looked at her. they weren't super far apart, their legs were inches away from touching. "w-what!" she said back, regaining her composure. "the teacher told us to talk to eachother." he said while slumping his shoulders as he leaned onto the desk looking away from her. "about?..." she asked.
"i don't know!" he grumbled. "then why would you tell us to talk?" she asked, fully out of her daze by the frustration he was now putting her through. he rolled his eyes in response.
"okay. i get it. you hate me. but come on! you can talk to me like a human being for one hour." she fumbled her words out, some coming in stutters, some coming louder or quieter than the others. it sounded like she just learned to form sentences.
he took a sharp breath in. he thought about his response for what seemed like forever.
"i...i don't hate you." his voice only loud enough for her to here. her eyes softened slightly before he started talking again. "i just really don't fucking like you." he looked over to her, pure hatred in his eyes. she knew he didn't mean it when he said he didn't hate her.she just looked at him. she didn't want to entertain him at all. she held back the tears that were starting to swell in her eyes. she looked up at the ceiling for a split second, letting the tears return into her eyes. at this point, she didn't even hate him. she just felt... nothing towards him. all she was, was sad. "okay." she sighed. turning away from him and looking down at her hands on her own lap.
she fumbled with her fingers, breathing in and out at a uneven pace. her stomach felt tight. like a coil going in wonky ways, but tightening everything in her stomach at once.
he looked over to her just slightly, not moving his body but taking a small glance. he noticed her fumbling with her fingernails, and he somewhat felt bad. a feeling he hadn't had since he got his mohawk. "i'm sorry..." he mustered out after a minute of silence between the two. the classroom was loud, really loud, but in the corner where they were, it was dead silent. and you could cut the tension with a knife.
maevis wanted to respond. she wanted to accept the apology, because, that's just the kind of person she was. it didn't matter how badly you wronged her, she was always going to forgive you. she saw the good in everyone. even in hawk. but, she didn't want to give him any attention at this point. she just nodded her head slightly before just staring at her lap.
he fully looked at her as he waited for a response. but there was none. this feeling of guilt was really washing over him now. he didn't want to feel this way. he didn't want to feel bad for her!
the rest of the class felt like a eternity. they didn't talk at all. they didn't want to talk. they couldn't talk. hawk knew that the feelings were maevis couldn't go away. as much as he resented her, and wanted those feelings to go away. but they genuinely couldn't.
