"I'm sorry, but we have confirmed you have Hanahaki Disease."

Yoichi's blood ran cold.

It had been a week after Hiori and Rin's wedding, and they decided to have a simple honeymoon in Kyoto, which Karasu and Otoya had helped set up because Hiori had been so busy with the wedding.

(He knew because he had been the consultant of the two who had offered to help. They didn't know a single thing about honeymoons or good places to go. He had to smack both of them three times to calm them down.)

He had gone so long without it too...

If he had caught it when Rin and Hiori started dating, he was sure he'd either be painfully oblivious to his feelings because of the surgery or six feet under.

The second option seemed better.

Now that his brother and Rin had tied the knot, was there any reason to still be here?

Either they lose their memories of the time they loved the person, they forget the person, they lose their memories completely, or they forget how to feel love. It's... not really that great, I have to say..."

"The second and third?" Yoichi asked, his voice coming out as a whisper.

"Well, the second one is if the afflicted person loses feelings, falls for someone else who loves them back, or if the person they loved decides to reciprocate. This is the happier option. If this happens, the flowers will stop growing in their lungs and all that's left is to cough the rest out."

The doctor decided to leave out the part that only one person he had ever seen had gotten cured by this method.

"The third..."

"I die." Yoichi completed it for him.

"Hah... well. I guess that's putting it simply."

Yoichi was silent, still trying to process this.

He didn't want to live a life with any of the side effects the surgery had.

Suddenly the idea of dying seemed better in his eyes. Maybe he should already start writing a note to the people he loved and-
