                                                                                 Polaris

"God, I love being at a desk on a friday night when everyone has clocked out only because my boss gave me work he told me I didn't finish even though I swear he didn't mention this at all." I whisper to myself. I'm sitting at a desk. My desk. With a computer you need to press the on switch twice, then hold it for 3 seconds, then hit it at the right angle just to turn on. My rich boss is such a cheapskate for buying used computers. Being a CEO of a rich car company would make you think he'd invest in good computers so we'd get our work done in time. "You're perfectly capable of doing work in any circumstances.".

Such a fucking hypocrite.

I start to tap on my pencil. Don't even really need the pencil since my work is online. Just helps me focus. But the stupid beeping on the elevator doesn't help me focus. "Beep". I hear this noise everyday since the secretary has to be in front of the elevators to greet guests. But this has been going off for 2 weeks and if I really wanted to, I think I could be diagnosed with psychoticness.

Beep.

The elevator makes a different noise. I raise my head up. It's the noise where someone is coming up. Weird. It's 10 o'clock at night. Who the hell is this? The door starts to open, I tense up. When the door opens all the way, I let out a sigh of relief.

"Hey Liam." I watch him push a cart of electric equipment out of the elevator with the goofiest smile on earth. "Hey Polaris!." I roll my eyes and look back on my computer, writing the last couple of sentences of this email. "When are you going to fix my computer Liam?". I sense him come up and rest his arms on the desk. "You know I have busy things to do as a technician, you can't rush this talent." I raise my eyes up at him and give him a frustrating look. "You said you would fix this piece of crap weeks ago. But kept putting it off because you said your mom's dog died." I say in a frustrated tone. He raises his arms up and crosses them. "Hey! That was an excellent excuse!." I give him the most confused look on earth. I even put my pencil down to try and comprehend what he just said.

"Liam. Your mom died 3 years ago. All I want is for my computer to stop playing games with me." After 2 years working at this place and unfortunately, being neighbors with this idiot for just a couple months, I was eventually going to have to have conversations with him about his life and mine.

I know. I live next to him.

He starts to do his annoying giggle and hits the desk in laughter. "Don't worry! You know I'm just teasing, I'll fix it after the weekend kay?" He begins to push his cart to the left to where all the other offices are. I ignore him since I can't believe anything he says anymore. I stand up, grabbing the keys next to my computer to all the building's doors and walk with him to unlock the door.

"What needs fixing now that couldn't be fixed this morning?". "Your boss said instead of coming Saturday, just come in today where everything is closed, but to not worry since you are going to be here." He hasn't dropped that smile yet. I wonder if he does mouth massages since his mouth has to hurt from smiling all day. "How's the bakery shop goal of yours going?" He tilts his head slightly when he asks this question. I let out a subtle sigh and shrug. He always asks this every time we see each other.. "Just a few more months of this job and I can quit. Hopefully."

We both reach to the door and I see him in the corner of my eye stopping just a half an inch before hitting the door. I then look down to my 20 keys and pick out the goldest key. I put it in the keyhole and take a minute because this lock is usually specifically the most frustrating.

"Do you usually stay here late?". I hear him say behind me.

"Not usually. The boss is just making me stay to finish some paperwork last minute".

I push the door open for him to go through with his cart. After opening the door and turning on the main lights, he comes through. But suddenly stopping after his toolbox on the floor. Making the loudest noise known to man, right next to the sound of my baby brother when he used to,

I stop.

And remember.

After a second, I snap out of it and watch him bend down, trying to put it back on the cart. But, again, it falls right on the same spot. After a couple times watching this idiot try to put this back on the cart with no success, I finally speak out.

"Need help there Liam?"

"Please."

I let out a soft chuckle and walked towards the toolbox, surprisingly still intact. Kneeling down and picking it up. "I usually have more space, but your boss just said to bring everything so that's what I did. I think he might have been exaggerating.". I nod and try to fix my short ass skirt that the boss says has to be above to knee. Pervert.

We walk across all the boxed up offices that has no personality and no color. Every single one has the same tan color walls, same rolling chair, same pens, same computer with the same home screen, etc. They won't even let us bring pictures of our families. Well, I don't have one but I still think it's unfair for everyone else.

We reach to the door to the floors.. technology.. stuff. I don't know this is just where Liam goes to fix what needs to be fix. I put his tool box down and pick out the key to the technology door. As soon as I unlock it,

SHATTER

I jump, almost dropping the keys. Liam, jumping as well and looking at where the noise was. I don't look just yet because this just means I have to send another email before I go home for whatever broke in this cheap fucking building. Besides, it's probably one of the lights burning out after being on for no long than 5 minutes. "Oh shit, this is like the 6th time this happened." I sigh and look up to see one of the lights out. Now looking down, seeing all the glass on the floor. "22nd time." I correct him. He widens his eyes in shock and looks at me. "Shouldn't by like.. I don't know, the 3rd time replace those lights?" I shrug and open the door to let him in. "One of the cheapest lights on the market. Even though it costs more to replace them than to just buy the expensive ones."

He chuckles and rolls the cart into the room. I close the door after him and lean on the wall next to the door to wait for him. I jiggle my keys and look up at the light again and softy sigh.
