Liam adjusted his tie for the fifth time, staring at his reflection in the elevator's polished doors. Over a week of frantic preparation had led to this moment. He'd spent so long pining for Sarah, believing she was out of his league. But now, with his bank account healthy, his IRA burgeoning, and his wallet full, he'd finally worked up the courage to ask her out.
Securing a reservation at Jasmine's had been a challenge. Without connections others might have, he had to rely on his intellect, refreshing the online booking page for hours and using a script he'd hastily coded to snag a last-minute cancellation. He'd agonized over every detail: selecting the perfect outfit, a crisp new shirt that still felt stiff against his skin, even splurging on an expensive watch. Hopefully Sarah would be impressed.
The memory of asking her out still made his palms sweat. He'd rehearsed perfect words a hundred times, trying to sound casual about suggesting such an upscale venue. Yet when the time actually came, it was a rushed, blundering mess.
As the elevator ascended, Liam took a deep breath. The doors slid open, revealing the breathtaking rooftop garden of Jasmine's. He stepped out, Sarah at his side, and for a moment, he forgot to breathe. The setting sun painted the city skyline in hues of gold and pink, highlighting the sleek, minimalist design of the restaurant. Carefully manicured beds of colorful flowers and herbs lined the perimeter, their fragrances mingling with the aroma of gourmet dishes. In the center, a small fountain burbled softly, its gentle sound a soothing counterpoint to the distant hum of city traffic.
"Wow," Sarah whispered, her eyes wide, taking in the breathtaking view. "This is... incredible." Her gaze lingered on a nearby mural. Liam wondered if Sarah had painted it. It looked like her style, and this was the kind of ritzy place that would buy her works.
Liam smiled, a mixture of pride and nervousness fluttering in his chest. "I'm glad you like it." All the money he'd spent, all the planning – it had to impress her. He tugged at his sleeve, making sure the expensive watch was visible. This was his chance to show Sarah he could give her the life she deserved.
His eyes darted from table to table, taking in the crisp white tablecloths, the gleaming silverware, and the patrons in their designer clothes. He tugged at his sleeve, the fabric feeling tighter and itchier than ever. He resisted the urge to fidget with the new watch. As the maître d' led them to their table, Liam's steps felt clumsy compared to Sarah's graceful stride. He pulled out her chair, his movements stiff and rehearsed, before settling into his own seat, perching on the edge as if afraid to fully relax into the plush cushion.
"This is quite a change from a gaming hangouts," Sarah said as they sat down. "How exactly did you afford this place? It seems... sudden."
He couldn't help but notice how Sarah's eyes lingered on his new watch. He tugged at his sleeve, suddenly self-conscious. "Well, I wanted tonight to be special"
As they perused the menu, Liam's eyes widened at the prices. He swallowed hard, trying to mask his surprise. "The, uh, herb-crusted lamb looks good," he tried to sound casual.
Sarah nodded, "It does. Though I'm leaning towards the truffle risotto." She paused, studying him. "Liam, you know we could have gone somewhere less... extravagant, right? I enjoy your company, not the price tag."
Liam smiled, though there was a hint of nervousness in his eyes. "Of course. I just wanted tonight to be special," he said softly.
Sarah raised an eyebrow slightly. "It is special, but... this is quite a change from our usual gaming hangouts. Is everything okay?"
Liam fidgeted with his napkin, avoiding eye contact. "Everything's great. Just thought we could use a change of scenery."
After a moment, he sighed. "Well, I... I did get a promotion at work."
